Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church was organized in 1875, ten years after Bishop Payne organized the South Carolina Annual Conference.  It is located in the Round O Section of Colleton County and belongs to the Beaufort District of the South Carolina Annual Conference.  Mt. Zion's original heirarchy included Rev. James Nesbit, Pastor; Rev. George Harris, Presiding Elder and Rt. Rev. Jabez Pitt Campbell, Bishop.  Trustees James Nesbitt, Edward Patrick, Secpio Coaxum, Robert Hayne, John Gavson, and Briston Jenkens were original keepers of Mt. Zion's properties.  Mt. Sunday service was held under a Bush Arbor, which was located between what is known as the McDonald's Tent and the Serving Shed.

In Deed Book 28, page 492, Trustees Soloma Singeton, John Simons and Chas Legara of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church purchased one acre of land from Carolina Smalls and his wife, Mary Smalls, December 17, 1906.  TO build a house of worship for the use of the members of the A.M.E. Chruch, which shall be known as Mount Zion Church in the United Stated of America according to rule and discipline of the said church, which from time to time may be adopted and agreed upon by the Ministers, and Preachers of the said Church at their general conference in the United States of America.

The Deed was sealed and delivered February 14, 1907.  The acre of land was purchased for the amount of six dollars.  At that time the members were only able to build a small board Church.  So in the summertime when the weather was good Sunday School and Worship Service was held under the Bush Arbor.

In the early 1900's school was held in the tent, which was located in the area behind what is known to us as the water pumphouse.  As the number of students increased classes were held in the Church.  Teachers were Mrs. Sadie Campbell and Sally Campbell.

Down through the years more land was purchased.  Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church now consist of 6.3 acres of land.

In the late 1960's the members of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church started working toward the rebuilding of a new Church.  Through hard work and by the grace of God Mt. Zion A.M.E. was rebuilt in the year of our Lord 1970 and dedicated under the pastoralship of the Rev. W.C. Cain, the Rev W.F. Ball, Sr., Bishop and Rev. B.N. Gray, presiding Elder.
