Why Do We Homeschool?

For a long time before my daughter started pre-K, God dealt with my heart about homeschooling her.  I kept reminding Him that I wasn't disciplined or organized or structured.  Therefore, He must be confusing me with someone else.  But when God calls He equips!

Dacey started pre-K in the public school system and enjoyed it somewhat.  Being the spirited young lady that she is though, the system tried to clip her wings.  Sitting still is just too hard when there is so much to see and do.  And who wants to learn when there are other children around to play with???  After Dacey's teacher suggested getting her on a pill at the tender age of four, I knew it was time to make other arrangements.

God recalled to my heart the homeschool choice.  I knew it was right.  Tommy agreed.  Dacey agreed.  So we took her out of school and began homeschooling.  Though we've only done one complete semester, it is one of the best choices we have made for Dacey.

Dacey's mind is a sponge, and she is quick to soak up knowledge.  She is eager to learn and is disappointed on days that we don't have school.  She does wonderful with one on one attention that she was not offered in the public school.  She also has a stronger bond to her two younger brothers than she did before.  As a result we also homeschool Jaden pre-K at his request!!!

I don't believe that all Christians should homeschool.  I wouldn't push that agenda on anyone.  We are to be salt and light and if that is taken out of schools, God help us all.  But it is for some!!!  And if it's for you, God will guide your heart to it.

What about socialization, you may ask.  Schools are not the only place that children can socialize.  And whoever came up with the notion that for a child to be well rounded they need to spend seven hours a day with twenty others the same age?  Where else in society are we broken off to into age groups?  My children know how to behave around others from a newborn infant to an aging great-grandmother and are comfortable around all.  I also like the t-shirt with the picture of the pregnant teenage girl and guy smoking pot at a bus stop that reads, "This is what you want me to socialize my child with?".  My kids have other outlets for time with children.  They enjoy them very much too.  Dacey takes gymnastics, and Jaden will begin karate as soon as he is old enough.  And all three enjoy being around other kids at church.  Best of all, they have each other.

As for me not being disciplined, organized, and structured?  Again, when God calls, He also equips!  My children's education is not something I take lightly.  I have become those things since taking on this responsibility.  Homeschooling has made me a better person too.  I am so thankful that God brought us to it.
