| There's a road that runs between Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia that can make the traveler feel like time has stopped where it's at. As history would tell us, the Colonial Parkway follows a route that has been around since the 17th century and has long remained an icon for visitors and residents alike. When I drive down the Colonial Parkway, I am taken back in time, I can let my mind feel free, and I can enjoy the beautiful scenery as I drive. | |||||||
| The times I have driven down the Colonial Parkway, looking out onto the wilderness that lies on each side of me, I am reminded of a movie called Tuck Everlasting. As I drive by, scenes from the movie flash before me as the scenery along the parkway takes me back in time to a place that was not traveled by stage coach but only walked on by foot. Before I know it, I am daydreaming of a day when people walked between the tall swaying trees and brush on a bright sunny day. The rush of the day seems to slow down as I pass by several trees and wonder what it really must have been like in colonial times. | |||||||
| As I drive along with the windows rolled down and the wind blowing through my hair, it makes my mind feel free from the worries of the busy day. Even the sounds of the passing cars seem to disappear into the air of the moment as I pass by many trees, watching birds fly from the tree to the ground in search of food for their young. I peer through the glass of my car and listen to the rustling of the trees that can be heard making the sound of music and beauty turn a stressful day, well, peaceful. The shadows that are created by the trees make the road seem like it is of timeless beauty, peacefulness, and calmness. Off to the right of the Parkway is the York River that seems to add an even more peaceful feeling to the day. As I peer out through the trees as I drive, the water on the river seems so calm and smooth like glass. | |||||||
| The beauty of the Colonial Parkway is one of tall, green trees, green shrubs, and a two-way road going through the lush area. There are few signs along the parkway that would take away from the beauty of the wilderness. During the fall, especially, the trees are changing colors from orange, red, and yellow. As I look to the ground I can see the leaves falling off the trees towards the ground and unto the road. The colors of the trees and leaves on the ground almost seem to blend into one another as I pass by quickly, giving the landscape a blanketed look. During this season, chillness can be felt along the Parkway and I can see that the trees feel it too, for they drop more leaves off of their branches onto the road below. The brisk breeze of the season also makes the trees sway to the rhythm of the air; it's almost as if they are making their own music that makes me want to sway with them. | |||||||
| If you get a chance to just take a drive, take it right down Colonial Parkway. Be prepared to take a step back in time, let your mind feel free, and just sit back and enjoy the beauty of the Colonial Parkway. No matter what season you are visiting or if you are a resident of the area, the beauty will catch your eye and ease the pressures of the day while traveling through. | |||||||
