SLAVERY EQUIPMENT
Gorean slavery is a major institution and many items have been invented and
designed to aid in its practice. Many of these items were created to fill
a specific need of the Slaver's Caste and others were developed simply for
the use of any slave owner. The following is a sampling of a number of tools,
equipment and items used in slavery. There are undoubtedly other items that
exist as well that have yet to be mentioned or described in the books. Most
of the items described here come in a wide variety of types, geared to one's
personal preferences. It is possible that some people have even custom ordered
items to fit their particular preferences and such custom made items may not
be generally available.
Anchor ring: This is essentially a
steel ring to which a slave or any other animal may be chained or tied. Anchor
rings may be set on the exterior of buildings or on poles to hold tharlarions
or kaiila. They may also be known as slave rings. Please see the entry on
"slave ring" for further details.
Anaesthetic darts: These darts are
covered with an unknown anaesthetic substance, meant to render a victim unconscious.
The darts can be thrown or used to stab someone, thus injecting the substance
into the bloodstream. It takes about forty Ihn to render someone unconscious.
Due to this lengthy span, capture scent is often more effective. It is unknown
if an antidote exists to prevent the unconsciousness before the forty Ihn
are up.
Ankle rack: This is a wooden device
similar to a set of stocks though this device is only for a person's ankles.
It is constructed of two wooden pieces, each with two semi-circular openings
on the edge of the wooden block. The two wooden pieces are hinged on one side.
On the other side, the blocks can be secured by a staple, hasp and padlock.
In Schendi, the ankle rack may be used in a form of punishment where one's
feet are severed. This is performed on a slave in the books and it is unclear
whether this punishment may also apply to free people or not. The rack is
suspended in the air so that the victim hangs down, their feet the highest
part of their body. Their hands will just touch the ground and they can be
used to hold the person up, taking some of the pressure off of the ankles.
From that position, a man may then use a scimitar to severe the feet at the
ankles.
Belly chain: This length of chain
will fit around a kajira's waist and cannot be lowered to the ground due to
women generally having wide hips. There is also a padlock on the chain behind
the girl's back. Attached to the front of the chain may be a medallion bearing
the "kef" symbol to identify the girl as a slave.
Binding fiber: This is commonly a
strong twine made of strips of leather or a fiber-like that has been created
to hold slaves and prisoners. A piece is often long enough to encircle a slave's
waist up to three times. It may even be used as a belt for her slave tunic.
The binding fiber is most often used in the capture and binding of slaves
but it can also serve other functions. It may be used as a leash or even as
a whip.
Blind fold: The common Gorean blindfold
consists of three separate pieces. There are two rounded pieces of soft felt,
about three to four inches in diameter. These are to cover the eyes. There
is then some type of binding to hold the patches against the eyes. This could
be a long cloth or scarf that is wrapped several times around a person's head.
This method prevents a person from being able to easily peer out from the
blindfold as is possible with many common Earth blindfolds. A slave hood,
not a blindfold, is more commonly used when transporting slaves when you do
not wish the slave to know where she is going. Though a slave hood offers
greater protection, and a blindfold is far easier to remove by a slave, the
blindfold has its own advantages. The less cover of the blindfold allows a
girl's mouth to be visible and available.
Body chain: This item is often considered
a type of slave jewellery but it can also be easily used to restrain the girl
as well. The body chain consists of a length of chain, about five feet long,
that can be looped around a girl's throat or body. The manner in which the
chain is wrapped around the girl varies according to the preference of her
owner. The chain is not very heavy though it is quite solid and well able
to act as adequate security. This chain, if used as jewellery, may be decorated
with wooden beads, semiprecious gems, and bits of leather, ribbons or any
other similar type of item. These chains are having two sets of detachable
clips so that the chain can act as a security device. The clips include a
pair of snap clips and one of lock clips. A body chain costs about one tarsk
bit.
Body hood: See the entry for slave
sack.
Branding irons: Most slave girls are
branded to identify them as slaves. They are most commonly branded on the
outside of the left thigh, right thigh, or on her lower left abdomen. A girl
though can be branded anywhere on her body. A girl is likely to be branded
only once in her life. The most common brand is the "Kef", the first
letter of "Kajira" in cursive script. The Gorean word for a brand
is "kan-lara." Though mechanical devices exist to brand girls, most
men prefer hand branding. Hand branding does give a more personal brand, instead
of the uniform brand from a mechanical device. Branding is also commonly left
up to experts, Iron Masters. An owner would rarely brand his own slaves. Most
branding irons have a symbol that is one to two inches high. The iron will
be well heated before the branding. If a second girl is to be branded with
the same iron, then the iron would be first cleaned and then reheated. Thus,
this is not a quick process. A girl is branded for about 3 Ihn, about 4 Earth
seconds. She will be shown the hot branding iron before it is applied to her
skin, to give her some indication of what is to occur.
Branding rack: Applying a hot branding
iron to a girl is going to cause her great pain and her body is going to move.
Thus, a branding rack is most often used to hold a girl during this process,
to prevent her movements and thus ensure a good brand. The girl's arms will
be chained over her head on this rack. Her ankles will be similarly chained
to the rack. Heavy metal slats will then be wrapped around the girl's thighs
to hold her motionless. The slats leave sufficient bare flesh revealed so
that either thigh can be easily branded. Though a girl could be held down
by a man while she was branded, the rack provides more assurance that the
girl will not move and ruin a good brand.
Brands, penalty: Besides the normal
slave branding irons, there are also irons for punishment brands. These penalty
brands are smaller than normal slave brands, often only a quarter of an inch
high. These brands mark someone as a liar, thief, or traitor. Other such brands
may also exist for other types of offences though they were not specifically
listed within the books.
Capture scent: This is a liquid like
chloroform, used to render unconscious a captive. If a person is forced to
inhale this substance, it will soon knock them out. It is most often soaked
into a cloth and then placed over the nose and mouth of a potential victim.
Capture scent will render a woman unconscious in five Ihn. It is unknown if
it would take longer on a man and if so, how much longer. A woman victim might
fight for an Ihn or two but she would then be too sluggish and then would
fall unconscious. This is thus a quick acting substance, a very effective
tool for a Slaver.
Coffle rope: This item is common to
Torvaldsland and is used to link together a group of slaves. The rope is made
of braided leather, about a half-inch thick, and cored with wire. The wire
prevents girls from chewing through the leather.
Collar: There are a number of different
types of devices that are made to fit around the neck of a slave and act as
a collar. The most common varieties are made of iron or steel though leather
and rope may also serve as a collar. The most common collar for women is a
flat, light band of metal that fits snugly around the neck and that locks
in the back. A key is needed to open the lock which is usually a pin lock
with six pins, one for each of the letters in the word "kajira."
Some collars can be quite expensive and ornate, bejewelled and made from precious
metals. Those collars though are quite rare. Some collars may be enamelled
in different collars as a decorative matter. The most common neck sizes for
collars are the ten to twelve hort sizes. For male slaves, they have a much
simpler collar; generally an iron band hammered onto their necks and riveted
shut. They cannot be removed except by a Metal Worker. Collars serve several
functions. First, they are a visible symbol that one is a slave. Second, they
often identify a girls' master and his city. The collars are commonly engraved
with this information though certain types of collars do not permit engraving.
Some of those collars have alternative means to identify a girl's master.
Third, the collar can be used with various restraining devices, chains, leashes,
etc, to better secure a girl.
Collar, coffle: This type of collar is
commonly used when transporting a group of slaves. There are several varieties
of this collar available. One type has rings on the front and back. The collar
is hinged on the right side and locks on the left, not in the rear like the
common collar. A length of chain, about three to four feet long, is linked
to the front and rear rings and between each slave. There is another type
of coffle collar that has a hinge in the front and locks in the back. It has
a single ring, usually on the right side. A single chain is then threaded
through the rings of all of the girls on the coffle. Snap rings are then used
to space the girls on the chain.
Collar, dancing: There are many varieties
of dancing collars and they may have originated in the Tahari region of Gor.
They may also be known as a dancing chain. Basically, a dancing collar has
several attached chains that are used to enhance a slave girl's dancing. A
traditional type in the Tahari is the "oval and collar." Before
a girl is placed within this item, she is readied, often being belled, perfumed
and garbed in dancing silks. The girl will then be placed in the middle of
an oval of a light chain. She will kneel, her head down and will extend her
arms out. There are wrist rings near the top of the chain and they are attached
to the girl's wrists. The bottom of the chain has rings that are attached
to the girl's ankles. The dancing collar is then placed around her neck. The
front of the collar has a snap ring. The chain is then gathered into the left
hand and then locked into the snap ring, though the chain can move freely.
Unusually, the chain between the girl's wrists is about three feet long and
the chain between her ankles is only eighteen inches. The girl will then dance,
using the chain in that dance to enhance its beauty and grace. The chain does
not interfere much in the dance but it does serve to limit the dance in small
but significant ways.
Collar, message: This is also known as
a Turian message collar, likely as it was the of origin of this collar type.
It is a leather collar, often thick and high on a girl's neck. A document
is sewn into the lining of the collar. This is meant to be a cover method
of sending a message to someone. It would work best where people were not
familiar with such collars. Those aware of such collars could simply check
all leather collars for messages.
Collar, plank: This is a wooden collar
formed by two boards. A semicircle has been cut from both boards and they
create a circle when the two boards are placed abutting each other. The boards
are then held in place by five flat, sliding U-irons. There are also two hasps
and staples on each end of the boards. Padlocks are used on the hasps and
staples to lock the collar shut. This is similar to mobile wooden stocks.
Collar, plate: This type of collar
does not have a lock. It is a more permanent collar, one requiring a Metal
Worker to create and remove. Two narrow and straight bars of iron, about fifteen
inches long and half an inch wide, are used to create this collar. A Metal
Worker will use a hammer over an anvil to curve the iron into a circular shape
around the slave's neck. When the collar is completed, there will be a gap
of about a quarter of an inch between the two ends of the collar. This type
of collar is probably more likely to be used for male slaves.
Collar, shipping: This is a basic
collar worn by slaves when they are being transported by ship. The collar
signifies that the slave is a part of a ship's cargo.
Collar, Turian: The Turian collar, which
originated in the city of Turia, is a round, hinged ring. It is not the flat
band of metal like many common Gorean collars. The ring lies loosely on a
slave's neck but it still cannot be removed by that slave. It is loose enough
that if someone holds the collar, the slave can turn completely around in
it. It is harder to engrave this ring though than a normal collar. Thus, the
engraving will often be simpler than what information might be found on a
normal collar.
Collar stocking: This is also sometimes
known as a collar sleeve. It is simply a covering for a collar used to enhance
a girl's beauty. The stocking can be made from many different materials such
as silk, velvet or other cloths. These stockings though are not common in
most cities and there is no reason given for why that is the case. Possibly
most Goreans prefer to see the metal of the collar rather than covering it
up.
Control stick: This item consists
of a two foot long stick with a chain loop at one end. The chain loop is meant
to go around the neck of a slave girl. There is a leather loop at the other
end of the stick that commonly is placed on the right wrist of the slave's
owner. There is a trigger on the stick that the owner can use to either tighten
or loosen the chain loop, thus signalling and directing the slave. Thus, a
girl could walk in front of her owner and be signalled as to what direction
to walk by the master controlling the stick.
Dancing chain: See the entry for collar,
dancing.
Gag: There are many varieties of slave
gags on Gor and some versions might even be considered to be cruel. The basic
idea of the gag is to prevent a person from speaking. Gag types include ball-gags,
and metal and leather lock gags. A common gag has a wadding of a metal sphere,
usually covered with leather. A metal locking bar or strap passes through
this sphere. A ratchet-and-pawl device permits this type of gag to be fitted
to the individual slave. There are two general size ranges, a larger one for
men and a smaller one for women, though they each can be adjusted. These gags
though are seldom worn by men. These gags are secure enough that a slave could
not remove it even if their hands were free.
Girl-capture chain: This is like a common garrotte in many respects. It consists
of a narrow chain that ends in wooden handles on each end. This chain will
choke its victim but will not slice into the throat. Thus, it will subdue
without injuring which is a necessity if you are using it to capture slaves.
The chain can be adjusting by spinning one of the wooden handles and can be
controlled by only one hand.
gyves: This is an archaic Earth term
for a fetter or shackle, especially for the leg.
Harl ring: This item is named for
a Slaver, Harl of Turia, who first used it. The Harl ring consists of four
pieces. First, there is a metal ankle ring that locks onto a slave's ankle.
Second, on the back of the ankle ring is welded a closed metal loop. Third,
on the front of the ankle ring, fastened to another closed metal loop, is
about three feet of chain. Fourth, the chain ends in a locking device that
can be secured to the back of a second ankle ring. It is a very versatile
item and can be use to chain a girl to nearly anything. A "closed"
Harl ring is where you lock the chain on its own ankle ring around a tree,
pole or similar item. Harl rings are frequently used to form slave coffles.
Harl rings are convenient especially as a single key will lock and unlock
all of the rings on such a slave coffle.
Hook bracelets: These items are leather
cuffs with locks and snaps on them. They are soft and the snaps do not require
a key. By means of the snaps, the girl can be secured in various manners.
These items may be used in the pleasure alcoves of paga taverns.
Iron belt: This is a Gorean chastity
belt. They are primarily used to protect slave girls from unauthorized slave
rape. They are more likely to be used on white silks where the owner does
not want the girl to lose that status on the streets. It would be uncommon
for a red silk wandering the streets to be wearing an iron belt. There are
many varieties of the iron belt. A plain iron belt consists of two primary
pieces. One piece is a rounded, fitted, and curved waistband, flattened at
the ends. This obviously fits around a girl's waist. The end of this band
on the right side has a ring or staple welded onto it. The other end has a
slot that fits over the staple, thus allowing the slot to fit over the staple
so that a lock can be attached. The second piece is a curved band of flat,
shaped metal that fits between a girl's legs. One end of this piece curves
and closes about the waistband in the front, creating a hinge. The flat, U-shaped
strap of iron swings on this hinge. On the other end of this piece is a slot
that fits over the same staple as the other slot. It can then be locked with
a padlock. The second pieces have a slot at its bottom, about three inches
long and 3/8 inches wide. The interior edges of this slot are serrated, which
could be quite nasty to anyone attempting to penetrate that slot.
Iron Pens: Iron Pens "…generally
refers to all of the subterranean retention facilities in the house of a slaver,
not simply cages, but pits, steel drums, wall chains and such; it is the name
of an area, on the whole, rather than a literal description of the nature
of the only sort of security devices found there." (Assassin of Gor,
p.122)
kurt: See the entry for whip.
Leashes: The most common leash has
a lock snap and closes about a collar or collar ring. There are also specific
wrist and ankles leashes. Many leashes are cored with wire so that a girl
cannot chew through them. A leash is a very versatile item. They can be used
to tether a girl. They can be used to lead a girl, especially in crowds. They
may be used as a training device and most leashes are long enough to serve
as an impromptu whip. A slave can use the leash to entice her master. Some
Goreans may test a new slave's potential by leashing her and then watching
to see if she subtly and unconsciously will use the leash to be enticing.
Leash, choke: A common leash will not
choke a girl or impede her breathing in any way. A choke leash has been specially
designed to choke a slave if she tries to resist. This is most often used
as a disciplinary or training measure.
Leash collar: This collar has been specially
created for the use of a leash. It is a high collar with two buckle fastenings.
There is a metal plate that is riveted onto the collar and there is an iron
ring on the plate. The plate may be located on the front or back of the collar.
The leash is attached to the ring on the plate. If the plate is in the front,
the slave often walks behind the master on the leash. If the plate is in the
back, the slave will either walk beside or in front of her master.
Leg spreader: This item may only exist
among the Red Savages. It is most often used by the Red Savages on their white
female slaves. There are several different types of leg spreaders. There is
a single position leg-spreader that essentially consists of a length of wood,
a pole or a board, with a hole at each end. A girl's ankles are tied at the
location of the holes, thus spreading her legs. This type of spreader only
allows the legs to be spread in one position. Other types of spreaders have
additional holes that allow for additional positions. Still other spreaders
have multiple poles or boards that can slide apart. These spreaders can also
be used on the wrists though that is less common.
Manacles: These items are also known
as slave bracelets. They are used to secure wrists and ankles. Manacles commonly
have fixed sizes and there are four common sizes. The sizes are numbered one
to four. One is a small, two and three are average, and four is a large. Most
manacles though are adjustable for any of the four sizes. Ankle manacles use
the same size numbers as wrists but they are actually larger. For example,
a size two ankle manacle has an interior circumference of seven horts but
a size two wrist ring is only five horts. Manacles for men and women use the
same numbers but they use different scales, male manacles being larger. Most
slave owners prefer the size numbers of the wrist and ankle manacles of their
slave to match. Manacles in Torvaldsland are much plainer than those in the
south. These manacles are curved, hinged bands of black iron, about ¾
of an inch wide and ¼ inch thick.
Nets: A variety of nets are used in
the capture of slaves. Capture nets are used to subdue individual slaves.
These nets are commonly circular, very strong and weighted so they can more
easily be thrown. Wall nets are used to subdue groups of slaves. They are
large enough to block an escape route. Potential slaves will be chased into
an area where the wall nets are set up to capture them. Even sleen nets, used
mostly to capture those wild animals, may be used to also capture slaves.
In general, nets are used primarily in rural areas where there is more room
to use them. The congestion within cities nullifies some of the advantages
of the net.
Pleasure rack: This device is used
to display slaves or captives and it may also be used to hold a slave while
you have sex with her. There are many varieties of this device, some very
simple and other very complex. The rope rack is a simple device that consists
of a grid of ropes on a wooden frame. A net rack is similar though it uses
a net within a frame rather than the ropes. The more complex racks have various
gears, pinions, braces, sliding boards, notches and lock points, so they can
be adjusted to a wide variety of positions. In such a device, a woman could
be placed into a myriad of different positions. Not all of these racks are
comfortable for the women.
Quirt: See the entry for whip.
Sirik: This item consists of a collar,
wrist and ankle manacles and a length of chain. It is used to enhance a girl's
beauty rather than as a security device. The collar type can vary, from the
basic Gorean collar to a Turian collar. The chain is commonly ten to twelve
inches longer than what is needed to extend from the collar to ankle manacles.
The chain widths between the ankle manacles and wrist manacles are adjustable
to shorten or length the girl's movement ability. A girl can dance in some
siriks.
Sirik, work: This is similar to the
common sirik but the distance between the wrist manacles have an additional
length of chain, about three feet. This allows a girl sufficient movement
ability so that she can work in the sirik.
Slave bells: These bells are used
to enhance the beauty and allure of a slave. They come in different varieties,
varying by the number of bells, style of bell and method of attachment. There
are thong and lock types of attachment. The thong type is more versatile as
it can be tied anywhere on a girl. Pleasure slaves, paga slaves and dancers
are commonly belled. Bells are normally placed on a girl only by her owner.
Bells may also be used as a security measure at night.
Slave box: This item is commonly a
low, steel rectangular box, about four feet long, three feet wide and eighteen
inches deep. Boxes meant to contain male slaves are larger. The box opens
from the top. At each end of the lid is also a grouping of penny-sized holes
for air to enter the box. The box is locked and secured by two steel bars,
perpendicular to its long axis, and padlocked in front. The box usually has
two sets of rings on top where carrying poles can be placed so that the box
can be more easily carried. The exterior of the box is often painted or enamelled
white with a red kef on it, either cursive or block, to signify the sex of
the slave inside.
Slave bracelets: See the entry for
manacles.
Slave dip: This product is used to clean
slaves of parasites. Most often it is used on slaves who are to be transported
by ship. The slaves will be immersed in this liquid to prevent infesting the
ship's other cargo. The laws of many ports require all ships carrying slaves
to take this precaution.
Slave girdles: These items are simply
belts to tie around clothes to accent a girl's figure. There are various ways
to tie them, emphasizing different aspects of a girl's body, and it is said
that only men know how to tie them properly. Slave girdles may also be used
to bind and secure a girl if necessary.
Slave goad: This is an item similar
to a tarn goad but specifically designed for use on humans. The slave goad
was created jointly by members of the Physician and Builder Castes. The Physician's
Caste contributed its knowledge of the networks of nerve endings within people.
The Builder's Caste contributed its knowledge of the principles and techniques
used in energy bulbs. The slave goard has an on and off switch like a tarn
goad. But, unlike the tarn goad, the slave goad has a dial to modify the intensity
of the goad's strike. The intensity can vary from merely unpleasant to instantly
lethal. When it is at its lethal setting, the end of the goad will get very
hot and will be so bright as to be difficult to observe. When it strikes someone,
it will emit a spray of yellow sparks. Its use is unknown in most cities and
is rarely used except by professional Slavers. This is probably because these
goads are said to be very expensive though an actual price is never given
in the books.
Slave harness: There are many different
varieties of this harness and they can often be differentiated by their purpose
such as for discipline, display, or security. Essentially, these are leather
rigs, in various styles, that are similar in some ways to the harnesses used
on other animals such as tharlarions and kaiila.
Slave hobble: This is an item chain
consisting of a wrist manacle and an ankle manacle that is connected by a
length of chain about seven inches long. One ankle will be manacled and then
the opposite wrist will also be manacled. If a slave kneels this set-up will
not be uncomfortable. It is meant to prevent a girl from walking or running
easily.
Slave hood: These items are generally
meant to completely cover a person's head. The hoods are commonly heavy, opaque,
and can be locked, though there are numerous types. Some hoods are simply
bags with drawstrings at the bottom. Other hoods are sophisticated leather
devices. Some hoods may have a gag attachment. Such a gag may be wadding that
is sewn to the inside of the hood and then held in place by laces that emerge
through the eyelets to tie behind the neck. The hood may have a flap over
the mouth that can be tied shut. A slave hood is a more effective security
device than a blindfold as they are much more difficult for a slave to remove.
But, you cannot see a girl's face in them as you can with a blindfold. There
is also a half slave hood that only covers part of the head, allowing the
mouth to be revealed. This tries to cover the advantage of the full hood and
the blindfold.
Slave kennel: This most often refers
to a small, cement cell meant to hold slaves. The cell may only be 3' x 3'
x 4.' A slave must enter such a cell on all fours. The cell will either have
a barred door or an iron gate that can be raised or lowered. These kennels
can be stacked upon each other.
Slave locker: In some cities, there
are slave lockers where an owner can keep his slave for a temporary time.
The idea is similar to the lockers you see in gymnasiums, bus depots, etc.
An owner places a coin in a slot, often a tarsk bit, and receives a key to
a specific locker. He then places the slave in the locker. The door of the
locker is perforated so the girl can receive air. These lockers may be stacked
together. Obviously a girl cannot be left for too long in these lockers as
she has no food or water.
Slave mat: This is a rough mat to which
a slave girl may be commanded to go to as discipline or a prelude to sex.
The slave may not get off the mat unless she receives permission from her
owner.
Slave oval: This item is a hinged
iron loop which locks on a girl's waist. Two wrist manacles, on sliding loops,
are fitted on this oval loop. The loop has a welded ring on its back and a
bolt can be placed through this ring to fasten a girl to something or a chain
can be passed through the ring.
Slave pens: These are places to board
your slaves and both public and private pens exist. An owner might board his
girl if he is leaving the city for a time and does not want to take the slave
with him. The private pens are more often better places and in the private
pens a girl can receive training that she could not in the public pens. Most
slaves dislike the pens though.
Slave ring: This is simply a heavy
iron ring, about one inch in diameter, to which a slave may be secured. These
rings can be found in many different places such as on a master's couch, on
a floor or wall. Public slave rings are commonly found in numerous places
throughout the cities. The rings can be used not only to secure slaves but
also other animals, and even a Free Companion. A free woman might one night
find herself attached to a slave ring on her Companion's couch. This may be
as punishment or simply to remind her that she is a woman and thus to be dominated.
Slave sack: This is also called a
body hood and several varieties exist. Most slave sacks are made of either
leather or layers of stout canvas. Most sacks are usually strong enough to
hold even a man. The sacks may be fastened by cords, straps, laces or locks.
Being placed within a slave sack is commonly a form of light punishment. It
makes a girl feel helpless and it also keeps her unaware of her surroundings.
Slave steel: This is a generic term
for the metal items that are worn by slaves, including chains, collars, chains,
manacles and such. "…females locked in Gorean iron do not escape."
(Players of Gor, p.214). There is an implicit claim of ownership when someone
places a girl in slave steel. Rarely does anyone but a girl's master place
such items on her.
Slave strap: This is a heavy strap
that buckles in the back of a slave. On the front of the strap, at the belly,
there is a plate and iron ring. A chain, about five inches long, passes through
the ring. Each end of the chain has a wrist manacle. When a girl is within
the manacles, her arms cannot move too far.
Slave trap: This is like a device
akin to the traps used on Earth to ensnare animals. The slave trap has curved
jaws with heavy, sharp steel teeth. When the trap snaps shut on a person's
leg, it will keep that person there, even if the captive is a man. The trap
is not held shut by a spring as a strong man could then possibly open it.
Instead, a key is required to unlock the trap. Obviously, these traps have
the potential for damaging a captive so it is likely that they are more rarely
used than other methods of capture.
Slave tube: This is a device to be
used force feed a slave and is not a pleasant. The device consists of a cylindrical,
truncated cushion, usually of cork or leather. There is a circular hole in
the centre of the cushion. This cushion is forced into a slave's mouth and
then a tube is inserted into the hole. The cushion is intended to stop a slave
from biting into the tube. The tube will extend down to the slave's stomach.
A funnel is next placed at the other end of the tube. Liquids can then are
poured into the tube and thus down into the slave's stomach. A special plunger
can also be used to feed the slave semi-solid food such as slave gruel or
hash. When the cushion is originally inserted, the slave girl is most often
kneeling and her hands are tied behind her. After she has been force fed,
her hands will remain tied for about an Ahn so that she cannot try to induce
vomiting.
Slave wagon: This is also known as
a girl or cage wagon. There are many varieties of slave wagon. In one version,
there is a central bar down the middle of the wagon. Slaves are chained by
their ankles to this bar. The bar can be lifted so that the girl's are threaded
onto it. This type of wagon often is covered by canvas and over the canvas
will be a covering of blue and yellow silk. The silk can be removed if there
is inclement weather so as to protect the delicate fabric. There is also the
flat-bedded display wagon. This type of wagon has an iron framework and slaves
can be chained to it in various positions, displayed to potential buyers.
A wagon may also have a cage framework, like you might find at a zoo. This
may be used for male and female slaves, dependent upon the sturdiness of the
bars. Most of these slave wagons are painted or covered with blue and yellow,
the colours of the Slaver Caste.
Slave whistle: This item can be used
in issuing signals or summons to slaves and also in training them. Such whistles
are most commonly used by Slavers.
Slave wire: This item is similar to
barbed wire. It consists of closely interwoven strands of sharp wire with
numerous barbs and honed prongs. The strands are set at less than a hort apart
from each other. This can be used to enclose a slave pen, lay atop a fence
or wall, or to keep slaves out of a certain area. As it can permanently damage
a slave, its use should be judicious.
Snake: This is a single-bladed whip
made of braided leather. It is commonly about eight feet long and its width
varies from half an inch up to a full inch. Sometimes, the whip is set with
tiny pieces of metal. This is a deadly instrument and it can strip the flesh
from someone's back. It is most often used on men and men have been known
to die beneath its lashes. It is used only as severe punishment.
Stimulation cage: This item is a low-ceilinged
cage used to train slave girls. Though it is often roomy, the ceiling is only
about five feet high. The cage contains a myriad of objects, chosen for a
single purpose. "The accoutrements of the stimulation-cell are also calculated
with respect to their effect on the slave. There are brushes, perfumes, cosmetics,
slave jewelleries, heavy necklaces, armlets, bracelets and bangles; there
is no clothing; there are also cushions, bowls of copper and lamps of brass.
Importantly, there are also surfaces of various textures, a deep-piled rug,
satins, silks, coarsely woven kaiila-hair cloths, brocades, rep-cloth, a tiled
corner, a sleen pelt, cloths woven of strung beads, cloaks of leather, mats
of reeds, etc." (Tribesman of Gor, p.24) "The point of this is that
the senses and body of the slave, stripped save for brand and collar, and
whatever perfumes, cosmetics or jewelleries she may wear under the instruction
of her trainer, are being taught to be alive, to sense and feel with great
sensitivity; the senses and skins of many human beings, in effect, are dead,
instead of being alert and alive to hundreds of subtle differences in, say,
atmospheres, temperatures, humidity, surfaces, etc. A girl with living senses
and a living body, of course, is far more passionate than one whose senses
and body sleep. The skin itself, in a trained girl, becomes an extensive,
glorious, marvellously subtle sensory organ. Every bit of the slave, if she
is well trained, is alive." (Tribesman of Gor, p.24-5) This type of item
is most often used by Slavers though a personal owner who trains his own slaves
might also possess one.
Submission mat: This is a type of
slave mat used in the Tahari region. Like other slave mats, these are very
rough and are likely even rougher than most other mats. Despite their name,
they are used like any other slave mat.
Tassa powder: This is a reddish powder
that can be used to render a person unconscious. It can be mixed with any
type of liquid but most often it is used with red wine. Due to its colour,
it would show up in many other drinks. The red wine though helps to conceal
its presence. The powder is tasteless so it could only be detected if it was
seen. It is potent enough to knock out men as well as women. It is sometimes
used by Slavers or others who want to capture someone. There is nothing to
indicate in the books that you can kill someone by using too much of this
powder. There is nothing in the books to indicate that there is an antidote
that can be used to prevent the powder from taking effect if the antidote
is taken before ingesting the powder. There is also no indication in the books
as to how long the effects of the powder last.
Thumb cuffs: These are small and light
items, easily carried and concealed. They lock only a person's two thumbs
together and can be painful if they are locked too tightly. They are much
less secure than manacles. In addition, a girl could injure her thumbs, possibly
breaking them, if she panicked or tried to free herself from them. Thus, most
people will not use them unless they can supervise their captive at all times.
They are not a common security device.
Turian slave bar: This is simply a
metal bar with a collar at each end, commonly a Turian collar. Behind each
collar are manacles to lock a person's hands behind the neck. This is used
to secure two prisoners together.
Walking chains: This is another item
used primarily in the Tahari region. In this region, a well measured stride
is thought to be very appealing. Though men dispute the proper length of this
stride, it is probable that the proper length would vary from girl to girl.
As some girls have longer legs than others, their strides would also vary.
The walking chains consist of two ankle manacles connected by an adjustable
chain. The chain can commonly be adjusted from lengths of two inches up to
twenty inches. In the Tahari region, even some free women will measure their
stride, using silk or leather thongs. There are even some free women who will
use a walking chain.
Whip: The common Gorean slave whip,
also known as a kurt or quirt, has five broad, flexible straps. Each leather
strap is about two and a half feet long and one and a half inches wide. The
whip handle is eighteen inches long and has a loop on its butt end so it can
be hung from a hook on a wall or a belt. Though it may leave a temporary welt,
it doesn't permanently mark a victim. Thus, this whip is favoured as a means
of discipline as it will cause pain without causing injury. Other types of
whips exist such as the one-bladed bosk whip and the snake.
Whipping ring: This device consists
of an iron ring set into the ceiling. A chain descends from this ring and
ends in a six-inch diameter ring. A person's hands are then tethered to this
ring. Through the use of the chain, the person's hands can be raised above
their head and the person can even be raised up a bit. The person might be
permitted to only stand on their toes. The person is then ready for a whipping.
Yokes: There are various types of
yokes including the improvised girl-yoke, punishment yoke, stock yoke, work
yoke and yoke ties. The improvised girl-yoke consists of a stout branch, about
two inches thick and five feet long, drilled at the centre and near the extremities.
It fits behind the back of the girl's neck and a long, single thong of rawhide
fastens the girl in place. Her left wrist is thonged and then tied to the
left end of the yoke. The thong is then passed through the centre hole and
looped around the girl's neck maybe five times. It then passes through the
right hole and around the right wrist. Smaller yokes, maybe two and a half
feet long, may be used for other purposes such as enjoying a girl in the furs.
Yokes for prisoners are usually formed by three spears, two upright and the
third bound horizontally across the first two. Prisoners are then marched
in a long line, two abreast, between the uprights. They cannot pass under
the horizontal spear without lowering their heads and bending their backs.
Some warriors choose to die rather than do this. A similar yoke is used for
captive women but is set much lower, usually so that they must pass under
it on their bellies. It is also formed of brooms not spears. The horizontal
bar is also set with slave bells.
