The Tunnel:Where is it?

Here it is
If you read the below you'll see I put up an initial page about this electronic publication. I mailed e-mail to the address they gave, [email protected], and began to receive the publication. They send it to you as an attached file using mime encoding.

I have received many issues by now. Click Here to access what I have.

Here is the original bit I put up about the Tunnel.

A Reuters story I saw today (6-18-97) had the headline: "Activists Launch Anti-Communist Email Magazine". It is called "The Tunnel". Here is a snippet from the report.

Anonymous Chinese have launched China's first electronic underground magazine and its cyberspace publishers say the publication is aimed at smashing the official stranglehold on freedom of expression.

"'Tunnel' is mainland China's first unrestricted magazine to be distributed by electronic mail and its aim is to break through the present lock on information and controls on expression," said the magazine's inaugural statement.

Its founders launched Tunnel magazine on June 3, and devoted the first issue to a memorial to the hundreds of civilians killed when troops and tanks of the People's Liberation Army Daily crushed student-led pro-democracy demonstrations centered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 3-4, 1989.

The Chinese-language magazine had sent out five editions by Wednesday.

The article went on to say that it is written in China and sent out to the US via e-mail. It then is sent around anonymously by e-mail. People who receive it can pass it on to otherss. Anonymity is the key as the folks writing for it do not want to be put in jail.

This seems like an interesting development. I jumped on the search engines when I saw this article but found nothing about it at Lycos, AltaVista or Hot Bot. I also checked with Deja News to see if there was any mention of it on the usenet discussions, but found nothing. Also China News Digest had nothing about it.

But, the article did give out e-mail addresses. It said that the journal was sent by [email protected] and that comments could be sent to [email protected] and that contributions could be sent to [email protected].

I wish I knew more. Maybe I will later. Check back.
