JIANG RAPPED FOR MISTAKES IN DEALING WITH TAIWAN
New York, May 19 (CNA) The latest Newsweek says that Communist Chinese President Jiang Zemin has been blamed by his rivals supporting Qiao Shi, the powerful head of China's Parliament, for Jiang's four missteps in dealing with Taiwan recently.
The latest issue of the New York-based magazine which will hit newsstands Monday cites internal party documents as saying that Jiang's rivals, including supporters of Qiao Shi, have blamed Jiang for four major missteps. The first occurred last year, when Jiang did not seek approval from party patriarch Deng Xiaoping before unveiling a concilliatory proposal to imporve links with Taiwan.
They told Newsweek that though Deng is ailing, he still has moments of lucidity, and he is reportedly furious with Jiang.
Jiang is also blamed for appearing overeager to invite Taiwan's President Lee Teng-hui to a summit and then for reversing course and using militray exercises in the Taiwan Strait in a clumsy bid to intimidate Lee, it says.
Finally, Jiang's rivals have criticized him for blaming the army when his saber rattling resulted in a torrent of world criticism--and won Lee a larger-than-expected victory in recent presidential elections, it notes.
