These are excerpts from the Family Research Council's Washington Hotline. I'm not sure exactly what is this "Hotline". I think it is what you may here if one is to call their hotline on the phone. I found the transcripts at their Legistative Hotline section of their websiteFrom their March 28,1997 message
From April 4, 1997Issue Four. Christian Persecution in China.
We recently learned that on March 4th, even as preparations were being made for Vice-President Al Gore's visit to China, Shanghai police ransacked the apartment of the bishop of the city's underground Roman Catholic Church -- a Church which has been forced underground because the practice of Roman Catholicism is illegal in China. The police took the bishop's bibles, various religious articles and all the money they could find. FRC will run a full-page open letter from our President, Gary Bauer and other pro-family and religious leaders to Mr. Gore in the Easter Sunday edition of The Washington Times. In the letter Bauer and the other leaders state, "This act of terrorism was plainly timed to intimidate Catholics and other Christians in the period leading up to Holy Week and Easter. Chinese authorities engaged in a similar crackdown last December, targeting Catholics and Protestants in a campaign designed to prevent any observance of Christmas. If history is any guide, the raid on Bishop Fan will be revealed to be part of a larger campaign of terror and religious oppression throughout China." This Easter season, let's all resolve to remember the persecuted church in China.
Issue Two. Christian Persecution in China.
On Easter Sunday FRC published in the Washington Times an open letter to Vice-President Al Gore concerning China's human rights abuses and the Clinton administration's apparent refusal to make human rights an issue in our government's dealing with this communist-run country. On Wednesday, March 2, Mr. Gore's press secretary called the 26 people who signed the letter "right-wing extremists"! It is deeply disturbing that this Clinton administration official has decided to use personal attacks and smears rather than seriously debate policy. The "right-wing extremists" who signed the letter included former Democratic Governor Bob Casey of Pennsylvania; John DiIulio, a Democratic social scientist; Jim Dobson; Chuck Colson; other evangelical leaders; Catholic leaders and academic experts from places like Princeton. In light of this outrageous personal attack, FRC President Gary Bauer and other co-signers have requested a meeting with the Vice President to ask him to explain what is "right-wing" or "extreme" about defending human rights and religious liberty.
