Here is a quote by Clinton (from a Reuters article dated 1/28/97):
I believe that the impulses of the society and the nature of the economic changes will work together, along with the availability of information from the outside world, to increase the spirit of liberty over time. Many people quite agree with the President's comments. But, doesn't it seem strange for the President of the US to say this at this particular time and in such a manner. Remember, the Berlin Wall fell because the communist regimes of eastern Europe collapsed. The part part of his statement about the spirit of liberty increasing over time is tame enough. That could include the current government in this growong spirit of liberty. But when he then likens it to the Berlin Wall falling he sure is indicating the CCP is going to fall.I don't think that there's any way that anyone who disagrees with that in China can hold that back. I just think it's inevitable, just as the Berlin Wall fell.
The Clinton administration has recently been very publicly trying to "mend the ties" between the US and the PRC that have been frazzled. Clinton is planning on meeting with Jiang Zemin for a summit sometime this year and again next year.
But then he pretty much outright states that the CCP is doomed and this inevitable downfall is quite a worthwhile expectation.
How do you think this makes the CCP feel?
