| Fifth Grade Update - November 3, 2008 | ||||||
| Reading We are wrapping up both our novel study of Mixed-Up Files and our Journeys & Quests unit. Our Mixed-Up Files test, which is both open book and open note, is scheduled for Friday (11/7). Our Open Court Reading test is scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday (11/10 & 11/11). This test requires two days to complete due to the amount of writing. Our next reading unit is Energy at Work, which is found in our newer Imagine It! reading textbooks. Writing The class is busy revising and editing their classmate biographies. The final drafts will be due on Monday (11/10). Each student will need to contribute a picture of himself/herself for the class book that we will create. Pictures can be printed or sent electronically. Please note that these pictures will not be returned. Next week, we will dive into some story writing with our new creative writing notebooks. Math We have delayed our Unit 2 test in order to ensure that all students have a firm grasp of multidigit multiplication. Our test is now scheduled for Thursday (11/8). An optional, extra-credit review sheet will be distributed tomorrow in class. In our next unit, we will focus on geometry angle measurements, similar and congruent figures, attributes of geometric shapes, and more. Science There is so much to learn about the weather that we just cant seem to stop. In the last two weeks of our weather unit, we will focus on the water cycle, precipitation, tornadoes, blizzards, and weather maps. I expect our end-of-unit test to fall on November 20. Our next unit will be all about energy, tying in nicely with our reading unit. Social Studies In Social Studies, we are finally getting the chance to work with our textbooks. In our first chapter, we will get a broad overview of the people and government of the United States. We will examine statistical data and discuss the steps of wise decision-making. In our second chapter, we will learn about the regions of the country and begin a group project to study a particular region in greater detail. Buddies Field Trip Dont forget our buddies field trip this Friday! All students should wear weather-appropriate clothing and good walking shoes. National Anthem I hope that all of the fifth graders will be able to join us to sing the national anthem this Friday at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Dukes West Campus. If you have not already done so, please let me know if your child will attend. We will meet in the stadium lobby between 6:30 and 6:45 PM (Please note that this is earlier than the previously announced time.). Students should wear neutral bottoms and purple shirts (to be provided by school). November Assembly Please join us for our November assembly on Friday, November 21 at 2:00 PM. Our Talented Tornadoes will be Sean and Julie. |
