| � Reading � This month, we will begin our new reading unit, Making a New Nation, which focuses on the transition from Colonial America to the United States. Story selections will include excerpts from If You Lived at the Time of the American Revolution by Kay Moore and Shh! We�re Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow�s poem �The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,� �The Master Spy of Yorktown� by Burke Davis, and �Give Me Liberty� by Russell Freedman. This unit will fit nicely with our next novel study, Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, and our upcoming Social Studies unit on the Revolutionary War. � Heritage Projects � The students� heritage projects were a rousing success! We were treated to family stories, wonderful pictures, and delicious food. Please stop by to see the projects outside our room during the week after Spring Break. � Potluck Supper � Our potluck supper will take place on Thursday, April 23, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the home of the Sporn family. Look for details and directions in the April 20 Quick Notes. � Writing/Grammar � Since April is National Poetry Month, we will be experimenting with different forms of poetry. We will read from a wide variety of poets and try our hand at such styles as haiku, diamante, and concrete poems. � Math � In Unit Seven, we will focus on integers and exponents. This week, we have already learned about the powers of ten and scientific notation. After Spring Break, we will review parentheses and order of operations before wading into the addition and subtraction of integers. For additional details, please the Family Letter which was sent home in the April 3 folder. � Science � We have reached the end of our geology unit. When we return from Spring Break, we will review and prepare for our unit test on Thursday, April 23. Our next unit is Ecology, which focuses on the interdependence of plants and animals in an ecosystem. � Social Studies � In Social Studies, we are learning about the conflicts between the colonies and England which led to the Revolutionary War. � April Assembly � Please join us for our April assembly on Friday, April 24, at 2:15 PM. Our Talented Tornadoes will be Pearce and Gina. For our entertainment, the first and third grade classes will present a series of skits. |
