Our hike to Stuart Falls Hike, June 2003
This is a little story about us.  We thought we should tell the world how we met.  We met on January 5, 2003 and that is when this all began.

We met on Sunday at church.  Marianne was new in the ward and was meeting everyone.  Doug was the assistant executive secretary and it was his job to make sure all the new people had their pictures taken for the ward photo directory. Doug went around to all of the
Sunday school classes and pulled the new people out of their classes.  Marianne was one of them.  After  taking the pictures Doug found out that Marianne had lived in Germany for the past year.

Marianne explained that she had lived in Germany as a nanny and was just returning to school.  Doug also spoke German because he had lived in Vienna Austria for his high school years.  Once we started talking in German we did not really want to stop talking, but Marianne needed to go back to her class.  Doug made a special mental note to go and
Marianne.  When Doug showed up to visit Marianne the first time, she was all gross and dirty because she had just gotten home from her catering job.  He had made up some excuse to come over and ended up staying til curfew.
We talked non-stop about what made us
feel like we were different from other Americans.  We  felt as though a part of us was European and it was the first time that we found someone that felt as we did.

Doug found out that one of the watches Marianne had purchased in Germany was broken and wanted to fix it.  He called the next day to see if he could take her to Walmart to have it fixed.  She said yes, but she wanted to pre-pay him by making him dinner. Like any good guy, he did not turn her down  and her food.  We ate dinner together and then headed off to Walmart where Doug attempted to fix Marianne's watch.  Unfortunately, Doug's valiant effort only caused him to injure himself.  The watch is still broken.

We decided to head home and we talked about Europe, music and our families.  It was striking how we never ran out of topics to discuss or stories that never got boring.

After bringing Marianne back home, Doug decided after some thought and trepidation that he would ask Marianne out even though he did not know her very well.  He decided to do something out of the norm.  He asked her to a fabulous performance at the Harris Fine Art Center (HFAC) on campus, which she naturally accepted. Doug had been an Usher and House Manager at the HFAC for the last 4 years.  Our first date.......
