Home In The Woods
The last rays of sun drifted silently
behind the trees in the distance,
causing shadows to appear and disappear,
moving to some secret woodsy dance
with music only they can hear.

A gust of wind rustled the leaves
of the tree outside my window,
causing leaves to drift silently down,
blanketing the ground far below.

Standing by the window looking out,
I think how I love the peace
here on the edge of these woods,
and I'm thankful I'm not in the city
living in some noisy neighborhood.

I watched a rabbit hop from behind some brush
and feeling safe now in the dark of night,
he moved out into the clearing of the yard.
Oblivious to my presence near the window
he felt free to let down his guard.

Suddenly he stopped, silently listening,
distracted by a sound only he could hear.
Turning, he hopped back into the underbrush,
disappearing into the dark mass of weeds as
he waited for the cause of the sound to appear.

Then a deer strolled across the yard
and as if he sensed me watching,
he raised his head and sniffed at the air.
Suddenly he whipped around in fright
and bolted into the night.

I admired his beauty from my window
feeling sadness to see him go,
yet I know he'll be back another time
when he feels safe enough
to venture close to this home of mine.

Turning from the window,
I'm suddenly tired and in need of sleep.
A smile formed on my lips as I closed my eyes,
and drifting off in the quite of the night.
I breathed a contented sigh.
Life is good.
