The Stray
I glimpsed you
from the corner of my eye,
limping across the yard.
With each pained step
you stopped to look around,
as if in fear of making a sound.
Your fur was matted
from sleeping in the woods
for weeks on end,
with dirt for your floor,
weeds for your bed,
and a pillow of tears
for your sad little head.
Bones showed through
on your starved little body,
so long without food
you barely had the energy
to keep moving along,
yet your will to live
was so strong!
I reached to pick you up
and cuddled you in my arms,
amazed to see trust in your eyes.
I fed you warm food
and held you all day
while you slept and dreamed,
no longer alone,
no more need to roam,
you've found love
and a new home.
