Southern Nights, Florida Style
Life On the Edge Of The Woods
I love summer nights.
sitting on the porch in the dark,
listening to night sounds
feeling the warm night air,
mixed with an occasional breeze
the faint smell of Jasmine everywhere.

I love listening to crickets
hum their magic tune in the dark,
while off in the distance a night owl
adds an occasional hoot at the moon.
Farther off in the woods,
a panther gives his nightly cry,
a warning to stay off his territory
to all the creatures nearby.

A panther is cunning and sly
yet his cry brings me no fear,
for he knows this home of mine,
this small space I occupy.
He's grown used to my presence,
and decided long ago
I'm no threat to his existence.

Fireflies light up the night,
weaving their magic spell in the dark.
Some drift so close I can almost
reach out my hands and touch them
before they melt back into the dark.

Leaning back in my chair,
I close my eyes and my mind drifts,
picturing myself as a young child
running through the dark
catching fireflies in a jar.
The memory brings a smile to my face
and contentment to my heart.
