             I Long For Naples

I long for summer days gone by, of white sands,
and the peaceful sound of the waves as they
wash onto the shores where they are bound.

I long to run barefoot through hot summer sands,
to feel the warmth against my feet,
then to run happily into the waves, as the coolness
of the water soothes the heat.

I long for breakfast at the Rexall Drugs,
and for walks along 5th avenue.
All the merchants had a smile to share,
there was always something fun to do.

I long for the old Beach Store and cokes from
the fountain, girlish giggles and carefree laughter,
and for the old movie theater we loved so much,
a place where time had no matter.

I long for walks on the pier in the warm night air,
the smell of salt water everywhere.
I long to see moonlight dancing over waters at night,
words can't express so lovely a sight.

I long for endless stretches of beach,
uncluttered as far as the eyes can see.
Of finding whole shells, precious pieces,
whole mounds of shells the way it used to be.

This was the Naples of my youth,
where beauty and peace abound.
If there is another place like it,
it's a place I've never found.

These are poems about my hometown the way it was when I was growing up.  Naples, Florida has grown considerably since then and is now more beautiful than ever.
      The Beach

Standing on the pier
gazing over the water,
I watch a playful dolphin
annoy a nearby floater.

Further up the beach
a couple walking hand in hand,
stop to gaze at a crab
crawling slowly through the sand.

The woman gives the crab
a gentle nudge with her toe,
sending it scurrying faster
then steps back to watch it go.

A father is walking slowly
along the edge of the water.
He stoops to pick up a shell,
then hands it to his daughter.

Nearby, two young children
toss a ball into the air.
Their laughter is contagious,
as it travels through the air.

Far out in the distance
the sunset is wonderfully bold.
Casting a colorful glow on the water,
beautiful hues of orange and gold.

A I gaze at a seagull
flying off towards the west,
I am again reminded that
life's simple pleasures are the best.
