Snape's Handwriting
NOTE: All information is based on Handwriting Analysis by Dorothy Sara, and my copy of Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling. All analysis is my own.
Though we do learn a bit about his handwriting, it is interesting to note the few occasions:
" ...where Harry's moonstone essay was handed back to him with a large, spiky D scrawled in an upper corner " (309).
"...he had written at least a foot more than his closest neighbors, and yet his writing was minuscule and cramped" (641).
1. We simply do not have enough to judge him on. The two incidences enough cannot say anything.
2. Much of handwriting anaysis is based on signs in conjunction to the rest of the handwriting. We only have a generalization of his handwriting when he was 15-- and only one letter from his adult life. They cannot be compared.
3. From Handwriting Analysis:
"...But when an adult makes capitals which are noticably larger than the small letters, it reveals a desire to be noticed by others. When analyzed in conjuction with other signs in the writing, the graphologist may find this large capital to indicate pride or desire for achievement, or perhaps vanity. But, whatever other signs show, the large capital in itself means that the writer is not the shrinking, modest personality. The one who makes the large capitals in an ornamental style may also be seeking to achieve social prestige."
First, the "D" is not made in conjuction with any other letters; it is made to stand by itself. To base an analysis purely on the "D" is not strong.
Second, as a teacher, I am sure that Snape wanted to make his hostility known to Harry-- this would explain the "spikyness" of the "D."
Third, the "D" is big only because Snape wants him to see it--notice it and his failure. (At least it's not a T) Since it is not in conjuction with any of his writing, it cannot be taken to say anything about his personality.
4. Miniscule writing does mean someone "who likes to do work which requires application to minute details, and to produce meticulois results." And even though Snape does indeed exhibit these qualities, I will not be convinced until we get details about his handwriting at 40, because one's handwriting can change from 15 to 40...
