| The West Carroll Republican Club meets on the third Monday of the month, 6PM to 8PM, at the Buttersburg Inn, 8 North Main St., Union Bridge, Maryland (Note, no meeting in January and February) We especially welcome guests who share an interest in community, government, a little politics and good conversation President, Frank Johnson; Vice-President, Selby Black; Secretary/Treasurer, Dorothy Rue NEXT MEETING: Mon. Dec. 20 - Christmas Party! RSVP to Selby Black, 410/775-2718 Merry Christmas! Our Christmas Party will be on Monday, December 20 starting at 6PM at the Buttersburg Inn. We normally estimate 25 to 30 people attending, but so that we can have a count to the restaurant for the dinner, please RSVP to Selby Black at 410/775-2718 by the 13th. We will also have our Famous Christmas Gift Exchange and everyone is asked to bring a gift costing no more than $10.00. It makes for a fun evening but we are unable to print the rules as they are too complicated and controversial. The only thing we can say in advance is, until the last gift is opened, dont fall in love with the gift you select. 2006: Closer Than You Think The next election is less than two years away, when we will be electing almost every position except President. What a lot of decisions to make! And weve got challenges in many areas: * Governor: The Governors supporters are all expecting a rough couple of years ahead, both in the press and in the virulence of Democrat attacks. Sen. Peter Franchot, from Takoma Park in Montgomery County, has already sent around a letter filled with invective. Thats just the start. It will take every bit of Carroll Countys 80% of the vote to return Gov. Ehrlich to office. * General Assembly. We can only expect (and hope) that everyone will be seeking re-election. We have to be prepared to support them in 2006. This especially means Sen. David Brinkley, Del. Donald Elliott (who are members of our club and make presentations frequently) and Del. Nancy Stocksdale (who is not only a member and founder, but helps with the Corn Roast and helps provide leadership as well). But we also need to support Sen. Larry Haines and new Del. Tanya Shewell. And although a bit out of our geographic range, lets not forget District 9s Del. Susan Krebs and new Sen. Allan Kittleman. * County Commissioners. We wont have three anymore, but five; and theyll be elected out of districts. But, like the delegation, we expect our current Board members may be interested in serving another term. All are members of our club, and often make presentations (and help with the Corn Roast) as well. One might expect that given their geographical diversity (Commissioner Jones from the West; Commissioner Gouge from the East and Commissioner Minnich from the Westminster area) they would be each have the chance to run in their own district, but the fact is that districts are yet to be written, indeed the districting committee is yet to be appointed. No matter how the districts are eventually drawn, the reality is that districts will change the dynamics of the commissioner races: if the Republican Party is to maintain its dominance, we cant be caught sleeping at the switch. New Central Carroll Republican Club The new club is up and running, and the first meeting is set for Tuesday, December 14, when National Republican Committeeman Louis Pope. Dinner starts at 6 and the meeting is at 7. Meetings are at the Timeout Sports Bar meeting room at the Mall in Westminster (next to Boscovs). Meetings are the second Tuesdays of each month, and annual membership is $10. In January, the club will host the State Partys Executive Director and Deputy Finance Director to discuss efforts to elect more Republicans to the State House is it time for something like a Contract with Maryland? February will bring State Party Chair John Kane. See you at the Christmas Party Monday, December 20 at 6PM Buttersburg Inn, Main Street, Union Bridge ** Note: NO MEETING IN JANUARY OR FEBRUARY ** |
