Lo Yang-class [Allen M. Sumner] Destroyer

The Allen M. Sumner-class originally included 70 ships, 33 of which were extensively modified under FRAM II (Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization). This modernization included new ASW torpedo launchers, facilities for operating ASW helos, variable depth sonar (VDS), machinery overhauls, new electronics and rehabilitation of the living and working spaces. Several of these ships were later transferred to Taiwan. Several Sumner-class ships remained active until retired in 1998. These elderly Lo Yang-class warships should have been decommissioned after the second-generation warships were commissioned. However, the Lo Yang-class warships served the purpose keeping up appearancess of showing that Taiwan still had a large number of naval ships, though they were of limited combat effectiveness.
