The first Tu-16 prototype flew on April 27, 1952 and represented the new generation of Soviet bombers to be built during the 1950s. Built in large numbers, some 2,000 were produced before production ended in 1960.
Approximately 130 Tu-16s remain in Russian service today, and was also exported to Egypt and Iraq.
