The Proposal
Part 3
The next morning we were to be given a rooftop tour of Biltmore Estate.  I was excited because I had never been on the rooftop tour before.  I did think it was strange that Michael was willing to go on this tour because he is scared of height's.  But I just figured he wanted my Mom and grandmother to experience the entire tour of Biltmore Estate, inside and out, and I was just along for the ride. In my mind I pictured him staying very close to the walls and not looking over the edge!  Our tour began and we ventured up to the roof on an old fashioned elevator, an OTIS elevator.  Our tour guide showed us some of the original pieces of architecture that was on the roof before they restored it.  The tour guide made a comment that he usually shows the original architecture towards the end of the tour, so I just thought he wanted to take us on a different route this time.  So, after looking at the architecture in the glass frames we walked up an extremely steep staircase which led us up to the roof.  It was absolutely beautiful up there.  The sun was shining, a bit chilly, and all you could see for miles was land full of flowers, trees, and rolling hills.  There is a copper dome on the roof that is directly above the grand staircase.  This is said to be the largest part of the roof.  Michael then asked the tour guide to hold the video camera so the four of us could have our picture taken.  All of a sudden, Michael says, "Remember that thing I was trying to tell you about all morning, but I couldn't remember what it was?  Well, I remember now."  Then he pulls out this piece of paper and begins reading the most beautiful monologue I have ever heard.  As he was reading it, I didn't know whether to laugh because I was in total shock, or to cry because it was the most precious thing I had ever heard.  So, I ended up doing both.  I just couldn't help myself.  Then of course, with the women in my family being as emotional as we are, it was like a domino effect.  First I started crying, then my mother started crying, and lastly, my grandmother started crying.  After Michael had poured his heart out to me, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, then he slipped the ring on my finger.  When I looked at the ring, I realized that it was the one that I was most partial to when we went shopping together for a ring.  I cannot explain how overjoyed I was at that moment.  It was truly the most happiest, fulfilling moment of my life, so far.

After all was said and done and we were walking around the gift shops, I started putting the events of the last 2 days together.  The ugly yellow shirt he wore to the airport, the tartar sauce that "accidentally" soiled his shirt, the only shirts he had were those that needed a tie, when the tour guide greeted us he gave Michael a wink (I thought that was totally strange), the tour guide starting us at a place that is normally at the end of the tour, and most of all how much Michael stressed that this weekend was for my Mom and my grandmother.  Then the light bulb went on in my head.  None of those things were by accident.  Michael planned each event to the tee.   Michael planned our proposal so well, that he was able to keep it from me.   Just to let you know, I usually know what is going on.  I applaud his clever, yet sneaky, ideas. He did an excellent job!  I will treasure that weekend for the rest of my life!
