| Nov 10 'Gladiator' breaks DVD record LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - DreamWorks Home Entertainment executives are saying they have set a new DVD sales record, shipping more than 2.6 million "Gladiator" double-discs for release in the United States on Nov. 21. In an unusual move, the action film starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix was released for rental Oct. 23 by Universal Pictures International Video in the United Kingdom first, where it has become the No. 1 renter of the year, surpassing the previous leader, Hollywood/Buena Vista International's "The Sixth Sense," and becoming one of the top five best-renting titles of all time. Consumer preorders at retail online sites also have been brisk, with "Gladiator" remaining the most-ordered movie at Amazon.com's DVD store since its Sept. 15 debut. |

Sled Reynolds, who provided the exotic animals for the film (he also worked on Ridley Scott's Hannibal), says it involved Russell Crowe's character battling a charging rhino in the ring. Sled says he found a pair of rhinos and shipped them to Europe, but the scene was cut before cameras rolled. "I thought it would have been amazing, and so did Ridley," Sled says. So, why the trim, one of several involving animal fighting? Reynolds says DreamWorks honcho Steven Spielberg didn't want to incur the wrath of PETA. |
