| Nov 26, 2000 Joaquin Phoenix on the Set of "Buffalo Soldiers" in Germany Interviewer: Joaquin, what is your part in buffalo soldiers? Joaquin: I play the battalion clerk (on the page? ), Ray Elwood and he there was a policy in the 80s in which you served, sorry, if you were convicted of a misdemeanour crime you could either serve a certain amount of time in prison or have a chance, which is the army. So thats kinda whats interesting about this film, in this period in the US army in which, you know, there were a number of convicts basically (laughing) in , you know, the army. So my character was caught stealing cars and he had the option of six months in prison or a year in the army. Interviewer: You like playing negative characters? Joaquin: No, but I think that there are some inaccuracies in kinda how people perceive what I do. For instance, that I played a serial killer, that never happened. So that I think the perception of the characters I play is kinda off. So I think that I have played a variety of different characters. Interviewer: Is there a difference between working in Hollywood and here in Germany? Joaquin: Well I think whats unique about working here is that, I spoke to you a little bit about it, but the fact that . (a tank rolls past) well there is a tank rolling by in the background! (smiling) We have an authentic feel while working here, were on a real army base and the tanks go rolling by so and there you see that sensation which always works when making a film theres a you feel isolated here in a really good way. There arent a lot of distractions that you might find if you were working at home, so it kinda creates this great unity amongst the cast and crew. Were kinda all here to stick to the job and were all working hard, so thats great. Interviewer: One last question. In Germany we would your name wayk-ien, what do you pronounce your name? Joaquin: (smiles) Thats fine. Interviewer: And the US? Joaquin: Ah no, in the US, in the states, I dont know, everyone says it differently. But its a Spanish name and its wak-een, thats how its pronounced. ************************************************** Transcribed from Real Player by Nat, thanks for the information! |
| Jan 29,2001 Joaquin was in "showbiz weekly" on sky news yesterday(1-28-01) in Germany. There was a short interview about 'Quills' and 'Buffalo Soldiers'. JP: "I read the screenplay and I just thought that it was so unique, I'd never read anything quite like it...it seemed like that was gonna be a film that we hadn't seen before...and on top of that there's a pretty good cast, Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Micheal Caine..." TB: "Did you read anything of the Marquis de Sade?" JP: "I didn't, I started to and then I felt that I shouldn't be that familiar with it...as well as our Marquis and the historical Marquis are two very different beings and that's something I think is very important to remember, that this really is a movie." TB: "I believe you are filming in Germany, is that right? What are you doing there?" JP: "I'm doing a film called "Buffalo Soldiers" with Ed Harris and Anna Paquin and Scott Glenn and Gregor Jordan is directing...pretty excited about it...!" TB: "How's it going?" JP: "I haven't started yet." TB: "Oh, you haven't started...?" JP: "No, I start on Monday, so I'm a little nervous...(smiles and puts his fingers to his mouth, if you know what I mean...the way you do when you wanna say "uuuhhh, I'm frightened"...;) Yeah, yeah...I always get nervous...." TB: "Why?" JP: "I guess because I only do films that I really wanna do, that I care about, and so it becomes "my God, can I do justice to this"...I guess the expectations for myself are so high and I just wanna be the best I could be, so....I get nervous...! "Here's what Kate Winslet said about him:"He just is never happy with anything that he does. He walks around saying "Oh my God...I look like a horse...I shouldn't be here...they cast the wrong guy..." Thanks to Anne for the translation from German into English and for her transcritption of the short interview! |
