Social Studies Class Outline

In the 7th grade, students are required; to complete the Units listed below!

Each is from 1 to 3 weeks. They are the following:

UNIT ONE- A Review of the Student Code of Conduct, and the reasons for the enforcement of the code & the law in general!

UNIT TWO-THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION AND YOUR CIVIL RIGHTS. This unit will cover the reasons behind the writing of our Constitution, the major compromises made during the Constitutional Convention, and it's Amendments to Guarantee the rights given in it.

UNIT THREE-THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND ITS STRUCTURE.

This unit will consist of an explanation and understanding of the structure and power of the federal government, and a comparison to state and local governments. This is divide into

4 different Sections as follows

a. The U.S.Congress and how it works.

b. The Presidential Powers, Duties and the White House staff

c. The Executive Departments and Independent Agencies

d. The U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal Court System

e. The State & Local Government Structure & Function

UNIT FOUR-THE AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM.

This Unit will consist of the study and comparison of Criminal and Civil law Systems, and a Mock Trial to Involve students in the Law-enforcing process.

(There will be an emphasis on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's!)

UNIT FIVE- THE AMERICAN ECONOMIC SYSTEM, and FLORIDA’S PLACE IN IT.

This unit is divided into 3 parts:

a. Study of Basic Economic Concepts

b. Comparison of Economic Systems

c. Florida’s Economic and Geographic Business Ties to the World

CONTENTS: The student will develop and utilise skills in reading comprehension, writing skills, interpretative and evaluative skills. These skills will be applied to the course work, which encompasses the Units listed in the previous page. Critical Thinking Skills will be applied throughout the school year. We will hopefully build in the student a sense of "Responsible Citizenship, using work on "Civil Rights" and their connected "Responsibilities". We will also Observe Hispanic History Month, and Black History Month with related activities and projects!

REQUIREMENTS:

1. All students will have with them "2" pens or pencils, a notebook, and a textbook, or/and workbook, that is assigned to them for the School Year

(If they lose it, they are RESPONSIBLE for the cost of that book)!

2. All Students MUST have a Report Completed and turned in, every 9-weeks Term! NO EXEMPTIONS! [Not completing the report will most likely cause the student to FAIL!]

3. All Students are required by the Miami-Dade County School Board to Complete

1 to 2 hours of homework per day!

GRADING SCALE:

All grades are based on a total points system in which all assignments in given a set amounts of points determined by the amount of work done for that assignment (the harder the work, the more points earned)!

30%-9-WEEKS REPORT (A sheet will be given to the student to explain the procedures and subject for writing this report.

[DUE AT THE END OF EACH TERM](Worth 1000, and up to 3000 points!)

50%-DAILY WORK (this includes any class work, homework, computer work, group work, notebook checks, daily journals, and any other activities that are connected with this class for a grade. Points go from 5 to 75 points)!

20%-EXAMS, TESTS, AND QUIZZES. This includes Unit Tests,

The midterm and Final Exam, and any weekly quizzes that are given by the instructor during the term. Each Test and the Final Exam has

1 to 2 Essay questions which must be answered to have the Test count!

Tests-100 points, quizzes- 25 points, POINTS DOUBLED 2ND SEMESTER!

9-Week Reports, Daily Work, Exams and Quizzes constitute

100% of the 9-weeks Grade!

TARDY/ BEHAVIOR POLICY: This will be explained on a separate sheet that will be with this packet, and kept in the students' notebook, with their notes!

GROUP WORK PARTICIPATION- Each group in each class will choose a group-leader, clerk, and spokesman. And Computer-person! The descriptions of each are below!

Leader-has to organise all the members of a group with their set tasks (including him/herself) for each and every group work activity.

Clerk-has the responsibility to write and finalise all written portions of any group work activity.

Spokesman- has to answer for the group all related group work activities involving speechmaking, answering questions, or presentations for the group.

Computer-person- has the computer knowledge to run and answer computer programs, and other activities related to the computer for the group.

MAKE-UP POLICY- ALL WORK TURNED IN ONE (1) CLASS LATE WILL BE HALF (1/2) CREDIT [except for being absent on the day the grade was due]. Two (2) days late, 0, and F, No Credit!

(pencils, papers, notebooks, etc...)THIS AFFECTS YOUR GRADE!!!

2. RAISE YOUR HAND TO SPEAK, & get Permission to Speak!!

3. STUDENTS will remain Seated UNTIL Dismissed by the Teacher!!

4. NO FOOD, of any type is permitted in all Team#7-3 Classrooms!!

1) INFORMATION & NOTES- Which consists of any sheet that is given to you to read, copy, or refer to that you keep, such as,

the course outline, class rules, notes, report information etc....!

2) DAILY JOURNALS- which are the collections of daily current events questions, & subsequent answers checked daily for a grade!

3) AGENDAS- which should have all your agendas for each 9-week term!

4) VOCABULARY- which should have all your vocabulary & definitions lists given in class (you will only change your notebook once!).

5) TEST REVIEWS- A set of test reviews given by Mr. Dennis given for each tests (your test study sheets) during the semester.

1ST. 9-WEEKS:

1) Any of the "Founding Fathers", and any American that has had a major influence, and or cause positive changes on the National Government, & it’s structure.

3) ANY PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, Concentrating on their achievements in office.

4)ANY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION from 1791 TO 2002!!

The Candidates, ,The Issues of that Election, & the Results!!

5) A Research Paper on the Election Process!

6) Any Government agency, department, bureau, commission, branch or other groups that are part of the National Government.

2ND 9-WEEKS:

1) Any Government agency, department, bureau, commission, branch or other groups that are part of the National Government.

2)Any Famous State, or Local government official who influenced a positive government change for the better.

3)any event that affected a government or social change in our country.

4) Numbers 1 & 3 from the 1st 9-weeks!

3RD 9-WEEKS:

1) Any Civil Rights Leader, or event during the Civil Rights Movement

2)Any Major Criminal, or Civil Court case that involved racial, ethical, or social issues. The Criminal Justice System!

3)Any Economic System, or Issues Currently being used throughout the world!!

4TH 9-WEEKS:

1)A Economic Report on A Florida Business, Concentrating on Products, Capital Formation, History, & Profit Issues!

ORAL REPORT 4TH 9-WEEKS

The Report can be done in one of 3 ways!!

1.By one person!

2. By two or three students!

3. As an Individual Written Report.

REQUIREMENTS:

A.THE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A 3 TO 5 MINUTE PRESENTATION IN FRONT OF THE CLASS(this will be done in May).

{If more than one student-add 2 minutes to the presentation}

B. THE STUDENT MUST HAVE:

-A SET OF NOTES, A POSTER AND/OR A 3-SIDED PLACARD TO PUT DRAWINGS, CHARTS, GRAPHS, AND PICTURES THAT CORRESPOND TO THE SUBJECT OF THE REPORT.

C.SUBJECTS:

-Economics- systems, concepts, & examples in the real world

-A Florida Industry, or Business

*The Marked(*) subject MUST answer these questions within the report itself!!

1. Describe what type of Industry/Business it is!

2. How does the Business/Industry affect the community around them?(Good & Bad)

3.What type of ownership is involved mostly in this Industry/Business, & Why?

4. What Careers can be available in this Business/Industry?

7.Describe the businesses/Industry’s Opportunity costs in detail!
