Like A Fairytale – Part Eight: Hansel And Gretel – Part I

"You are no trying."

"Not trying?! Of course I'm trying!"

"No, you are not."

This had been going on for well over an hour. The rest of the castle guests sat, bored, watching Sango refuse to make any progress. Sesshoumaru apparently had been asking Simple questions or giving simple tasks for Sango to complete. On all of which, she'd end up either yelling, shutting up completely, or throwing something... Normally at Inuyasha's head for rude commentary. To everyone's surprise, but almost sheer delight, Sesshoumaru stood up, glaring menacingly at Sango, whom sat, arms crossed, glaring right back.

"You are wasting my time girl."

"I never asked you to do this."

"Rin did."

"So you fancy her?" Sango smirked. She could see Sesshoumaru's face flush for a moment before he completely regained his cold poseur. Without a doubt, Sango could tell Rin was blushing madly while she could almost feel Inuyasha's delight in his older half-brother's discomfort.

"Do not toy with me human," Sesshoumaru spat, "If I had known any better, I'd say you were too afraid to remember anything of your past."

Sango flushed red, feeling seven pairs of eyes turn to look at her.

'I'm not afraid... Am I? Of course not! I just....can't.' Still, the demon lords words stung her in a way Sango never would have imagined. Standing to her feet, Sango said in a clear yet slightly wavering voice. "I am not afraid."

"Oh really?" Sesshomaru smirked, obviously pleased to get a reaction. "Then remember."

"I can't."

"You can"

"I can't!" Sango shouted, glaring up at him. "Don't you think I've tried? Do you think I like living a little servant girls life? Telling stories of a life I have no memory of?" Then pointing to the sitting Kikyou, "Catering to a brat like hers every need?!"

Kagome and Rin looked, genuinely shocked. They didn't believed Sango was so troubled with her life and had always treated her fairly. They thought of her as a Sister.

"Sango-" Kagome started, a bit hurt.

"No Kagome, it's not you. It's not Souta or Rin or.... I'm just..... I think I need to lay down. I'm sorry everyone." Sango said hurriedly, rushing past an interested Naraku to head inside.

"Well.... that was entertaining." He said, a smile playing on his lips. Miroku sent a glare his way before retreating inside after Sango. Kuranosuke kept looking from Sesshoumaru to where Sango once stood while Inuyasha gave alternating glares to both Sesshoumaru and Naraku, muttering something about cold hearted bastards under his breath.

"We are taking the tour." Sesshoumaru said, leaving no room for argument as he walked away. Rin feebly looked back to where Sango had left before trudging along after Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, Kagome, Kikyou, and Kuranosuke trailing behind. Naraku brought up the rear, suddenly seeming a lot more cheerful then before.

'I've found you'

"Sango!"

Sango turned around to see Miroku running toward her. Somehow, she managed to conceal a smile that somehow made its way to her face. Let's face it, anyone would blush to have a prince running up to you, especially after he found out you were nothing but a peasant.

"Sango, are you okay?" Miroku asked, panting a bit. Sango shook her smile away.

"I'm fine Miroku, but thank you. I'm just going to take a quick walk." She said, exiting through one of the palaces many gates and leaving Miroku to stand there.

"Oh... Well." He started, catching up to her, "Mind if I join you?"

Sango stopped dead, almost making Miroku bump into her. "Why would you want to?" She asked, clearly confused, "I'm a servant your highness, or didn't' you get that? There's no way you could possibly want to walk with me."

"But I do, and please, call me Miroku." He said, a bit nerved that she'd think of the situation that way. "I couldn't care less if you were a peasant or the Queen of this castle. You're still Sango and you've still got a great-"

"Hentai!" Sango screamed, slapping the prince as his hand groped at her rear end.

"Ah... Sango! I was going to say Personality! Hey! Wait up!" He yelled, holding his burning cheek and running after her. Sango let out a small giggle and kept walked toward the forest.

"Umm... Sango?"

"Yes Miroku?"

"Do you know where we're going?"

"Not a clue."

Miroku sweat dropped. It was still fairly early and he was almost certain that the sun was shinning brightly anywhere but here. Somehow, he had managed to follow Sango so far into the woods so that only tiny beams of light squeezed their way through the tightly packed canopy. Not that it didn't look wonderful, in fact, it looked like the scene from a fairy tale (A/N:......) And perfectly in the center of this perfect scene stood the most beautiful princess with her hair blowing in the non-existing wind.

"Miroku what are you staring at? Let's go." Sango scolded, knocking the prince out of his day dream. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Sango molded her way through the trees, her feet knowing exactly where she was heading, leaving her head up in the clouds. She ran her fingers over the rough bark of each tree she pasted, loving how it felt. She never liked the woods too much, and normally she and her brother avoided them unconsciously. Neither of them knew why, and frankly, neither Sango nor Kohaku cared. Now, however, Sango felt as though she'd been there before, and it sent chills up her spine.

"Hey... Sango?" Miroku asked, stepping beside her. Upset to be knocked out of her trance, annoyed she replied, "What is it Miroku?"

All too suddenly, Sango became aware of how far they'd strayed from the castle. On all sides, she and Miroku were surrounded by trees and not a single way looked familiar. Weeds and moss covered the forest floor. Even if there was a path in some earlier date, it was long since hidden from view now.

"I think we may be lost."
