Like A Fairytale –
Part Three: Home Sweet Home
"Where
are we going?" Kagome asked, leaning out the window.
"To the
"I
thought the
"It was
destroyed. By Demons. The Kingdom was very well known
for it's skill at demon extermination. Over the years, it's been restored. Even
some of the original artifacts, child toys, instruments, etc., remain."
"Sango has a fairy tale about that"
"Kagome
don't." Sango pleaded, not moving her eyes from
the window. Everything seemed so familiar to her... She just didn't know why.
"Really? I'd like to hear it, if you don't mind."
Miroku proposed. Sango
thought about it for a moment and turned to face him.
"Okay....
Once upon a time, there lived a King and a Queen...
. . .
Kissing the
foreheads of her children the queen pushed the small boat down the river as the
footsteps and screams of her people sounded behind her. Tears filled her eyes
as she watched the river take all she had left, away from the inevitable horror
her kingdom had come to. Watching her children drift away, the Queen failed to
notice the shadows closing in around her.
The girl
screamed as the shadows swept her mother away. Instantly, the creatures attention was drawn to the child and infant. With
a wicked smirk, the demons leapt into the water, eyes blood red, intent on the demise or their witnesses."
"Wow..."
Kagome breathed, still hooked on the story after all this time.
"You've
never gone that far." Rin agreed, "What
happens next?"
. . .
. . .
"I don't
know."
Rin and Kagome sighed, leaning against each other again. This always
happened... Neither noticed the distant look in their friend's eyes.
"Believe
it or not..." Miroku begun carefully. "That's not far off of what took
place. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed the story."
"What do
you mean?" Sango asked, looking at him
interested.
"Well,
you see-" Miroku was interrupted by a very
'dignified' snore. Kikyou had fallen asleep.
"...anyway! There were very few survivors, only three to be exact. They
told a very similar story, minus the parts of what happened to her majesty and
the children. They did say however, that there were indeed two, a girl and a boy."
"So why
do you suppose Sango's story is true, the part about
the Queen atleast?" Rin asked
"Because..."
Miroku said quietly, "That's where the remains
of the Queen's body was found."
An
uncomfortable silence filled the carriage, occasionally broken by Kikyou's ladylike snore.
"I
thought the woods were full of demons." Sango
commented eventually. She felt awful about what happened to the poor Queen.
What a horrible way to die. She felt like crying, not that she would allow the
others to see that.
"It
is." Miroku answered simply.
"Then why
is it that we're traveling through them?"
"Ahh... Because of these!" Miroku stated proudly, holding up a paper.
"A scroll?"
"Not just
any scroll my dear Sango. This scroll prevents
any demons from entering the road. They are indestructible and protect us. I
made them myself."
"So
that's why he's beaming" Kagome whispered to Rin.
"Indeed"
Sango rolled her eyes, "Is that supposed to be comforting?"
"No demon
will ever be able to enter this road, I assure you." Miroku
said firm and proud.
"WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"
Miroku Sango, Rin
and Kagome leaned out the window to see a small kitsune
run across the pathway.
. . .
"No demons huh?" Sango said
dryly. Miroku brushed it off.
"A baby demon. Doesn't count."
Just then, a
large fire cat demon ran after it, stopping for a moment to look at Sango, then running the same way
the kitsune did.
. . .
"Perhaps
we should move along." Miroku suggested.
"Yes."

It was long
after dark when they arrived at the castle. The village around it glowed
magnificently with their lights and fires.
"Well,
we're home!" Miroku exclaimed, hoping out of the
carriage.
"We? What do you mean we?"
Sango question as Miroku
helped her out.
"Well you
see-"
"Wow! It
looks so marvelous!" Kagome exclaimed, not waiting for Miroku
to help her, to jump out and start looking around.
"Kagome! Don't wander off." Rin
called, as she took Miroku's arm.
"I
won't!"
"How childish." The newly awoken Kikyou
scowled, "It's hard to believe we are related. Anyway, I suppose this will
do." She babbled on, waiting for Miroku to help
her down. Instead, he walked over to Sango.
Currently, she was gaping at the castle.
"Wonderful
isn't it?" Miroku whispered in her ear. Sango jumped, spinning around. She sighed and nodded.
"Yes, it
is... It's amazing. I'm surprised it was so well restored..."
"Indeed. Home sweet home. Come on then, I'm sure everyone's waiting
to meet you all." Miroku said, leading a dazed Sango by the hand. She blushed furiously, but didn't pull
away.
"Home
sweet home..."
