At
the present time, I am flailing around trying to teach this stuff.
Several
teachers from the Lewis &
Clark Rediscovery group have promised to help.
I'll gather everything we
find here. I now have Adobe Acrobat, so GLOBE
stuff that I rewrote
will require the free Acrobat Reader. The advantage
to the .pdf files is that
you do not have to reformat the files.

Glossary
This is the glossary from the GLOBE site, with some typos fixed and a line
after
each 10 words, to
facilitate quizzes. Requires Adobe Reader.
Rock
'N Soil This is from the GLOBE site, although I found it through NASA,
and it has
some wonderful songs about soil.
They are also asking for submissions... make it an assignment,
then send the best!
"Julia
Child" soil protocol training prep sheet This is a set of instructions
for GLOBE trainers
to use when teaching the protocols
to teachers. If nothing else, this serves as a good reminder
of our training. At the best,
it describes set up in explicit detail. (Something that may be
lacking from the protocols.)
Dr.
Soil Learning Activity A very creative Alabama teacher has come up
with a fun method of
introducing GLOBE soil protocols to
younger students.... although high schoolers would probably
enjoy it as well!
Bogolanfini
or Mud Cloth Technique Denise, this one is for you. Try it and
tell us how it works!
And maybe add some more specific directions.
Your students could try different techniques to
work out the best protocol, therefore
adding science to art.
Secrets
Hidden in the Soil This talks about how forensic geologists solve criminal
cases involving
soil. Perhaps one could use
this at the end of a soil study as an assessment.... solve the crime!
If
you decide to write something up,
please let me know!
Soil
Conservation Puppet Kit for only 200$ you get the puppets, songs and
scripts, as well as
questions to guide discussion.
Vicki, this is for you! From : SWCS (Alberta Chapter). Soil and
Water Conservation Society (Alberta
Chapter) Home Page [Online]. (1997, June 9).
Available: http://www.compusmart.ab.ca/swcsalta/index.htm
[October 29, 2000].
High
School Science Resource on Conservation These may be good, but they
are not available
online... there is an address for
more information. From : SWCS (Alberta Chapter). Soil and
Water Conservation Society (Alberta
Chapter) Home Page [Online]. (1997, June 9). Available:
http://www.compusmart.ab.ca/swcsalta/index.htm [October 29, 2000].

Ideas for science fair projects
Soil
Gallery this is NASA's Gallery of soil profiles. Looking closer,
it appears to be on the
GLOBE web site.... but I didn't find it
there.
Beginning
Soil Field Study I had the kids go outside and take samples along
a transect, then
come back in and characterize the
samples. They took digital photos, and practiced
characterizing their soils.
I refridgerated their samples and did moisture, pH, etc. on these
as practice. Requires Adobe
Reader.
Bulk
Density Protocol This is my rewrite of the GLOBE protocols. I
separated each
individual protocol so there would
be less confusion. Requires Acrobat Reader.
Bulk
Density Data Sheet: Same as the one on the GLOBE site, but I
couldn't get that
one to download. Requires
Acrobat Reader.
pH Protocol: Separated from the pack, as above. Requires Acrobat Reader.
pH Data Sheet: Same as the GLOBE
one; but this one should download.
Gravimetric
Soil Moisture Protocol Revised from the GLOBE teacher guide.
This assumes a star
pattern, but could easily be modified
to transect or pit. Requires Adobe Reader.
Soil
Temperature Protocol (Star) Another rewrite with all of the extra stuff
removed. Requires
Acrobat Reader.
Soil Temperature Data Sheet Same as GLOBE. Requires Acrobat Reader.
