Unit 1 Review Questions Please note: These ARE NOT the test questions. If you understand all of the answers to these questions you should do well on the test. Be sure to check your study guide as well, especially the vocabulary words. At the end of the unit you should understand all of them.
1. Compare mitosis and meiosis in a brief table:
Include kinds of cells, the number of cells produced, number or chromosomes (haploid/diploid), similarity to parent and daughter cells2. Cell cycle: When does DNA replication (synthesis) take place? What stages
make up interphase? What kinds of cells are involved? Name some types of
cells that are created by mitosis but do not divide.3. Compare and contrast interphase and interkinesis.
4. For each stage of meiosis, list visual clues that would identify that stage in
pictures. Be sure to include both divisions.5. Compare the results of spermatogenesis and oogenesis.
6. Give an example of a chromosomal abnormality that is a benefit.
7. What two processes allow for normal recombination of genetic material, and
when does this occur?8. Distinguish between euploidy, aneuploidy, and polyploidy.
9. When and how does nondisjunction occur? Distinguish between primary
and secondary nondisjunction. Compare and contrast the results of nondisjunction
in mitosis and meiosis.10. Name 10 human conditions caused by chromosomal abnormalities. Know
the cause (which chromosome and what is wrong with it) and a brief description
of each.11. Distinguish between crossing over and translocation.
12. How are chromosomes arranged on a karyotype? (3 things)
13. What is an ideogram?
14. Name and describe two prenatal tests that could diagnose chromosomal abnormalities.
