ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
UNIT 1: Introduction
STUDY GUIDEObjectives: (These are the major things you should know after you have completed
this unit. HINT: These are the areas that you will be tested on!!)1. Identify and describe the five levels of organization in the body.
2. Compare and contrast and be able to demonstrate each of the following:
superior and inferior; anterior and posterior; medial and lateral; proximal and
distal; superficial and deep; supine and prone.3. Identify each of the following body planes: sagittal, frontal, transverse.
4. Distinguish between the axial and appendicular portions of the body.
5. Locate each of the following: cytoplasm, plasma membrane, and nucleus.
6. Describe the function of each of the following: plasma membrane, endoplasmic
reticulum, ribosome, mitochondria, lysosomes, Golgi apparatus. Centrioles, cilia,
flagella, nucleus, nucleoli.7. Distinguish between the four main kinds of tissues found in the body.
8. Classify epithelial tissue by shape and arrangement of cells.
9. Give seven examples of connective tissue types.
10. Identify and describe the 3 types of muscle cells.
11. Identify a nerve cell.
12. List the 11 organ systems of the body. State major components of each.
13. Briefly describe each of the 11 organ systems in the body.
Vocabulary: (You will be quizzed on these words at the BEGINNING of the unit. This is done before the student begins to read the text. Research has shown that students are more likely to read and understand assignments if they have already been exposed to unfamiliar words.)
