A Digital Portfolio

Introduction:
This semester, each student will keep track of his or her progress by means of a digital portfolio.  At the end of the semester, each student will have a web page that will include pictures from each activity and a summary of the activity and what you learned.  Students will use a digital camera to take pictures.  Netscape Composer will be used to create the web page.  (Netscape Composer is a program that can be downloaded free of charge from the Netscape web site.)

Materials Needed:
You will need two blank disks and a case by January 12, 2001.  I will make available the cases you used last semester, but you may not get yours back, since most of them do not have names on them.   It will be much easier for everyone if you have the Acceptable Use Policy sticker on your ID.  If you do not have your ID with the AUP sticker on it, we will try to find a computer that will allow you to use Netscape Composer without being on the Internet.  Alternatively, you may make arrangements to go to the computer lab before or after school or during a study hall to complete your work.

Publishing to the Internet:
It will not be necessary for students to publish their work on the Internet.  Those who wish to, of course, may.  If your web page were published, there would always be a copy of it online, for those of you who may have a tendency to lose or destroy disks and cases.  There are a number of sites that offer free web page services.   I will show you how to publish to Geocities.  To publish on the Internet, you must know your e-mail address, or get one from Yahoo/Geocities.

If you do publish to the Internet, you must follow some of the district’s Internet Rules.   These are in place to protect you.  Some of the rules that apply include not naming any person in a photograph, or stating where you live.  If you wish, you may refer to yourself by your student ID number instead of by name.  Please do not give out details about yourself, including names of friends, marital status, where you work, etc.   Try not to have recognizable pictures of individual students on your web page.

Each Student Page MUST Include:
An index page with a short summary of the portfolio assignment.  A table with links to each activity.  A title, purpose, and summary of each activity.  A conclusion for each activity that shows that you have completed and understood the activity.  At least one picture for each activity that illustrates what you learned.   Identification at the bottom of the index page that includes your name and/or student ID, your hour and class, and the date the page was updated last.

Links for additional help will be available on my website.  If you have a question that is not answered there, please go to the Student Help Message Board. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hall/3904
