               THE STORY

LET ME TELL YOU....

about the best thing that's happened in Prescott recently - other than The Gateway Mall or WalMart Super Store, which, of course had tremendous impact on the area.  No, what I want to tell you about is much smaller than either of those, but in my estimation, no less important.

If you've reached this site, I feel it's safe to say you are a dog lover.  You may be a visitor or newcomer to our town, or checking out the area as a possible place to retire, or someone just looking for a safe place to exercise your pet(s)without a leash.  Well, look no further!

The WILLOW CREEK DOG PARK came into being early 2001.  It was born through the vision of a local resident, Glenn Wright, who   with the help of the Prescott Park and Recreation Dept. and generous donations from local businesses and individuals,  brought it to reality.  We sincerely thank them all!

In those early days it was little more than a weedy 2-1/2  acre plot surrounded by a chain link fence, but nevertheless, a little slice of heaven for dogs to romp and play without those hateful old leashes.

Since that time, as more people discovered it, the Dog Park has become a great place for both canines and humans.  Dog owners come from many walks of life with one common goal, the well-being of their pets.  While the dogs run and romp, there is much socialization among dog owners too; friendships abound among them.  All in all, it's a truly rewarding experience for both dogs and their humans.

Most dog owners using the park are caring individuals willing to go the extra distance for their pet.  They help keep the park free of animal waste.  It is not at all unusual to see persons armed with plastic bags, patrolling the grounds, picking up doggy doo.

Owners are encouraged to keep a watchful eye on their pet(s) at all times to discourage bad manners and destructive or possibly injurious behavior.  It is also not unusual for one pet owner to alert another, less alert, owner about his pet's behavior.  Most generally this is done in a helpful manner and is accepted as such.  Disagreements between humans and/or dogs are rare.

Dogs need to be with other dogs.  They need to play, chase balls, learn manners and be generally socialized so that, on the occasion when you do take them out on their leashes, they can be good citizens because, when they see another dog on the street, they recognize it's someone just like them and not a big 'hairy' deal.

The Dog Park is also a boon to those who, for one reason or another, cannot walk their dogs.  It enables them to see that their animal gets the exercise it needs

            IMPORTANT INFO

Completely fenced, the Prescott Dog Park has two separate areas for large or small dogs - though all sizes may co-mingle if their owners so wish.  When first entering the park, you'll find a staging area where owners are asked to unleash their dogs before entering the actual park.  Most generally all the dogs in the park will rush to the gate, barking and tails wagging, to greet every arrival.  Unleasing your pet in the staging area will help keep him from being intimidated by this pack of greeters.

There are picnic tables and benches, a large ramada for shade and a gravel walking path.  The park is maintained by the Prescott Park and Recreation Dept. although only the large waste cans are serviced.  Pet owners are expected to pick up after their animals and dispose of the waste in these containers which, along with plastic bags are situated around the park perimeter.  City water is available  for both humans and canines.

The  Dog Park is located on Willow Creek Rd. adjacent to Willow Creek Park. Going north from downtown on Willow Creek Rd., it is just beyond the Willow Lake Road. intersection and the York RV dealership.  Turn right at the entrance to Willow Creek Park.  Newly paved, ample parking  is available.

Going south from Pioneer Parkway or Highway 89, watch for the park entrance on the left a mile or so after passing Embry Riddle Aeronautical Univ.

by Marilyn Sullivan.  Marilyn and hubby, Jack, have been Prescott area residents for 5 years.  They were proud 'parents' of 10-year-old Murphy, an Australian Shepherd mix and 7-year-old Maggie, a Black Lab and Hound mix until Feb.27, 2006 when they lost their beautiful Maggie to cancer.  Both dogs were strays who 'adopted' the Sullivans near their former home in So. Carolina.
A few years ago several dog owners joined together as a group to promote the betterment of the Dog Park,  This group conducts fund raising events, solicits donations and works directly with the Prescott Park and Rec. Dept. to further this goal.  So far, with funds they have raised and  generous donations from local businesses, there are new trees, a large ramada for shade and a gravel walking track around the perimeter fence.  Plans are in the works for a dog agility course and other improvements as funds become available.
