Damadat
DESCRIPTION: Damadats are uholy creatures, incredibly feared. Even the 'level 1' Damadats are feared far and wide in the lands they take over. The general appearance of the Damadats are bipedal dragon-like creatures including taloned wings and horns. From the Damadat's chest are a pair of tentacles. The creature's body color ranges according to their heirarchy. The lower Damadats are deep blue up through indigo, until the pitch-black color of their leader, Damadrax. Their eyes also indicate their level. The lower level Damadats glow a hateful red up to the unearthly white of Damadrax.
Damadats take over civilizations that have grown fat, corrupted and decadent, bogged down in bureaucracy and apathy. Soon, their power overtakes the entire civilization, forcing the population to work towards the Damadats' end.
COMBAT/TACTICS: The Damadat's first line of defense is the armies which they take over. The Damadats use mind control to sway them. If a Damadat is encountered, it is usually the 'lesser' Damadat lead the armies, using their power first to take on foes, but if a Damadat finds a foe particularly intriguing or challenging, they will attack them, first using magic. The 'first level' Damadat has the same abilities as 5th level magic user, increasing 1 level per level of Damadat (i.e. Damadrax is an ninth level magic user). If spells fail, they then attack with physical attacks. If a Damadat happens to be defeated, he will pass any knowledge he has of his opponents to the nearest Damadat, until ultimately (if adventurers are lucky) it reaches Damadrax.
Damadrax prefer attacking from ground, but will attack in flight. If half of the Damadat's hitpoints are loss, he loses the ability to use his breath weapon. Damadat's can use their breath weapons once per day (except Damadrax who use it at will, but must give up all other attacks). The damage from a Damadat's breath is equal to half their current hitpoints. If the Damadat hits with a 20 to attack, he drags his victim to his chest tentacles for additional damage (1-4 points each regardless of level).
Damadats once slain will completely deteriorate within 1 week, leaving nothing.
HABITAT/SOCIETY: Damadats originated from an underground world, but prefer the upper world because they find the species unexpecting and easier to control (at least they think so). All Damadats are severely loyal to their leader, Damadrax. The Damadats love the large halls and buildings created by elaborate, decadent societies. Some believe the Damadats are inable to construct such worlds, and are envious. Also, it is easier for them to overthrow and take control of such lands rather than build those of their own. It is not known how Damadats reproduce, but it is well known what they eat: humanoids. They will run 'lotteries' which pick out citizens who are then brought to arenas or large fields where the Damadats will gleefully attack them and feed on the unlucky victims.
Damadats will dig out a lair beneath the capital building they control to hide the treasure, but will sleep and live inside the building.
ECOLOGY: Damadats produce no art or architecture, and hold only the treasure which they have taken from the great lands which they possess.
YIELD:
Medicinal: Damadat skin can be made into water-resistant clothing or tarps.
Spell Components: The eye of a Damadat will double the effects of a Wizard's Eye.
Hide/Trophy Items: Damadat teeth can be enchanted 'Damadat Men' which are exactly like 'Dragon Men' (q.v.)
Treasure: (Lair) B, D, Hx2
Other: Nil
