According to Hoffman, "The term graphic organizer is often used to describe strategies that help students construct meaning from assigned readings. Graphic organizers highlight ideas and represent relationships among key concepts."(Hoffman, 105) This is a clear definition which emphasizes the important elements of this teaching tool. Researchers have recognized that elementary students are introduced to expository texts which include lots of information that is difficult to organize and associate with prior knowledge. Graphic organizers are effective in giving students visual aids to represent and organize material.
In the article, Teaching Ideas, Brunn said, "Teachers strive to engage their students in literacy acquisition in ways that maximize their time and materials and that are efficient and effective."(pg. 522) One of the most difficult tasks for so many teachers is to find an effective teaching tool that will enhance the comprehension process in an effecient manner. Graphic organizers provide teachers with a tool that can produce these outcomes. This statement emphasizes the dominant goal of all teachers in their journey to educate young minds.
An important idea to consider is the significant impact that graphic organizers have had on the learning disabled. In the article, Graphic Organizers Benefit Slow Learners, Lehman states, "Research indicates that delayed learners need a great deal of structure and an organized format in order to learn new facts." (pg.53) After viewing some graphic organizers like a matrix or a branch-out web, one would recognize the significant benefits of this tool and how it meets the needs of the learners. People are immediate seekers of patterns in the environment which can be provided with graphic organizers.
