objectives in this unit

Use the process of statistical investigation to explore problems Analyze data using tables, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, box-and-whisker plots
Compare data using measures of center (mean, median, mode), measures of spread (range, percentiles) and data displays Explore relationships among data using scatter plots
Distinguish between samples and populations, compare samiles and use information drawn from samples to make conclusions about populations Apply selected concepts from probability to understand the concept of randomness and to select random samples

Vocabulary

Biased Sample A sample that does not accurately represent the population.  Biased samples can give misleading results.
Box and Whiskers Plot A display that shows the distribution of values in a data set.  A box plot is constructed from the five-number summary of the data.
Convenience Sample A sample that is selected because it is convenient.
Distribution The arrangement of values in a data set.
Five Number Summary The minimum value, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, and maximum value for a data set.  These five values give a summary of the shape of a distribution.
Histogram A display that shows the distribution of continuous data.  The range of data values, divided into intervals, is displayed on the horizontal axis.  The height of the bar over each interval indicates the number of data values in that interval.
Population The entire collection of people or objects you are studying.
Random Sample A sample chosen in a way that gives every member of a population an equally likely chance of being selected.
Representative Sample A sample that accurately represents a population.
Sample A group of people or objects selected from a population.  You can study a large population by collecting data from a sample.  You can make predictions or draw conclusions about the entire population based on data from the sample.
Scatter Plot A graph used to explore the relationship between two variables.
Stem and Leaf Plots A display that shows the distribution of values in a data set.  Unlike a box plot or a histogram, a stem plot allows you to see the individual values in the data set.
Systematic Sample A sample selected in a methodical way.
Voluntary Response Sample A sample that selects itself.
