Native American
Hertiage Month
Because a majority of the students in my school are Native American, we use this month to show pride in our heritage. Through out the month we have speakers and presenters talk to the students about different customs. On the last day of the month we have a student led festival in the gym. During this festival students are exposed to Indian dance, story telling, crafts, and other activities. This allows the students to take pride in their heritage.
~*~In my class we usually spend a week talking about an Indian tribe or discussing customs of long ago. This year we talked about customs of long ago. Below you will find a list of activities we did.
Activities
During this time we talked about homes, transportation, food, and other activities of long ago.

Homes: We discuss how long ago the Native American made their homes out of materials they found in the environment. We talk about how some tribes built longhouses, wigwams, and some built teepees. The students then made teepees out of construction paper. Then drew Indian symbols to decorate them.
Transportation: We discuss how long ago they used horses and canoes to get around. The students then made canoes out of brown construction paper.
Food: We discuss how the Indians grew and hunted their own food. I discussed with the students how they never wasted anything. When a buffalo was killed they used all the parts of the buffalo. The skin was used to make clothes or teepees. The bones where used to make weapons or tools. We discussed how Indians were the first to introduce popcorn. We tasted different types of popcorn and graphed our favorite.
We discussed how long ago the Indians used pictures or symbols to tell stories. The students made sand paintings using indian symbols.
To make the sand painting we used colored grits. (You just put grits in a bowl and add food color to get the desired colors and mix or you can use a bowl with a lid and just shake it.)
As a math lesson they created indian headbands. The students had to choose 2 shapes and create a pattern on a sentence strip. They loved their headgand and wanted to wear them all week.
Writing Activities:
*Students use Native American symbols to write their own stories
.

* We compare customs of long ago to customs we still use today.
