Theme Poster for “Harrison Bergeron”


Reminder about theme:

            As you recall, a theme is more than a story’s (or novel’s) topic or subject. The theme is the author’s point about a topic. It is the “so what.” A good theme statement states the author’s message about life or about human relationships. An effective theme statement applies to people in general, not just about characters in the story.

 

Assignment: Using the steps below, you will create a poster relating to the theme of “Harrison Bergeron.”

 

Process:

            1) Create a web focusing on the main ideas of “Harrison Bergeron.”

            2) Pick a main idea that you either especially like or that you find particularly important.

                        A) Jot down what points the author makes about the main idea.

                        B) Write a theme statement. This should be at least a sentence.

            3) Find evidence, either quotes or details, regarding the following:

                        A) Characters’ statements or thoughts

                        B) What characters do and how they interact with other characters

                        C) Examine symbols or literary devices

            4) Begin to make the “poster” on an 8½ X 11 sheet of paper

                        A) Include the following:

                                    i) Title and author

                                    ii) Main ideas web

                                    iii) Theme statement

                                    iv) Three supports of the theme statement

                                    v) Create a symbol or illustration of the theme

vi) Include a song, movie, book, etcetera that explores a similar theme. Explain how in a sentence or two.

                                    vii) Feature the theme, title and author the most prominently

B) Make it creative, make a collage, use Photoshop, use crayons, markers, cutouts from magazines, etcetera.
