Chapter Two: The Man Without Fear

"Middle school, at least our middle school, was basically a place you tried to survive. Last year in sixth grade, when it started, I still had a lot of friends from elementary school - but it was like we had all gone from a family sort of place to this big dim noisy train station. Everyone was rushing around and you hardly knew anybody, and there were predators. They were all over, the predators."

Choose and answer three of the following:
1. What is a predator? Look it up in a dictionary and write the definition below. What type of predator is the author talking about?

2. What words does the author use to describe the setting, the middle school? List them below.

3. What are some words you would use to describe our middle school? List at least seven.

4. What does the phrase "survival of the fittest" mean? Ask a friend or teacher if you do not know. Record your answer below. Do you think that this idea applies to middle school? Explain your answer.
