Wednesday, December 1, 2004:
1. If you are studying The Breadwinner, go here and explore this website. Click on the links of the left hand side of the page. Make sure that you check out the photo gallery for pictures of Afghanistan, general info, politics, news, culture, economy, geography, history, languages, etc. (all of the links on the left). Make sure to add this website to your bibliography..
2. If you are working on your geography scrapbooks, go to EnchantedLearning.com. Click on USA, then click on "State Info. Pages." Once you find your state in the list, click on it. Record important information in a word processing document (microsoft word, appleworks, etc.). You may print this at the end of the period. Make sure to add this website to your bibliography.
3. If you are working on your geography scrapbooks and have already completed assignment #2, click here. Read the first page and write down the definition of a biome in your notes. Using your prior knowledge, the internet, and your classmates, figure out which biome your state belongs in. For example, Vermont = "forest." Click on the generalized biomes and figure out which of those subcategories your state belongs in. For example; Vermont = Temperate Forest. Write down notes and add this to your scrapbook in the "region" section. Make sure to add this website to your bibliography.

Thursday, December 2, 2004:
1. If you are working on your geography scrapbooks, please continue working on the "region" section of your scrapbook. You MUST include what biome your state falls into. If you do not know what a biome is, please look at the assignment for Wednesday, December 1, and do step 3. Your HW is to finish the "region" section of your scrapbook.
2. If you are studying Afghanistan and The Breadwinner, get the rest of your group together and ask Ms. Cognato for the book. Go to the library and read the next two chapters and fill out the study guides. If you can budget your time appropriately, you will be able to do it all in class and you will not have any hw.

Friday, December 3, 2004:
1. If you are working on your geography scrapbooks, please start researching the "vegetation," section of your scrapbook. Find out what types of trees, flowers and other plants grow in your area. You may search online at Kids Discovery, Yahooligans, National Geographic, Kids Click and Enchanted Learning. You may also request books on plant life from your teacher. You may print information and pictures on plant life in your state (to the Mac Lab). 5 pages MAX per student.
2. If you are studying Afghanistan and The Breadwinner, get the rest of your group together and ask Ms. Cognato for the book. Go to the library and read the next two chapters and fill out the study guides. If you can budget your time appropriately, you will be able to do it all in class and you will not have any hw.


Monday, December 6, 2004:
1. If you are working on your scrapbooks, go here and write down the definitions of each kind of biome. You will be having a QUIZ on the different types of biomes this Wednesday. You will be allowed to use your geography dictionaries on this quiz, so please use this time in class to add these terms (different types of biomes) to your geo dictionary. If your dictionary is full already, you may create a "second quarter" geo dictionary. If you complete this activity in class, you will have no HW.
2. If you are reading The Breadwinner, go to the kitchen, or outside in the hall and read the next chapter of the novel. When you are done, fill out that portion of the study guide (as a group).
3. If you are reading The Breadwinner, go here and watch an online interview with the author, Deborah Ellis.

Tuesday, December 7, 2004:
1. If you are reading The Breadwinner, get the book and the rest of your group. Get pillows and take a laptop to the middle of the room. You are going to have a group discussion o the book. Go here for your discussion questions. Assign one person to be the group leader and to call on people. Another person should be the question master and be in charge of asking the questions. Assign someone else to be the time manager and get the timer from Miss Cognato, and allot a certain number of minutes per question. Assign another person to be the "on task manager," to make sure that people stay focused and don't go off on tangents.]
2. If you are working on your scrapbooks, continue studying the plant life and FINISH that page in your scrapbook. If you finish early, look for information on animals that live in your state.

2. If you are working on your scrapbooks, please continue to gather data. By the end of this period, you must have completed your food chain page for your state scrapbook. If you don't know what a food chain is, go here. To learn more about them, and to see a good example of a food chain, go here. Add the term "carnivore," and "herbivore," to your geography dictionaries.

1. If you have finished reading The Breadwinner, go here, print it out (to the mac lab), complete, and put in the Slytherin HW bin. Remember to write your name on it!
2. If you have finished reading The Breadwinner, go to the vocab sheet, highlight the words, then copy them into a blank Appleworks document. Use dictionary.com to define the words. Highlight the definitions, copy them into the word document (next to the vocab word), type your name at the top and print it out (to the mac lab). When you are done, put in the Slytherin HW bin.
3. If you are doing scrapbooks, please continue working on them. They are due on January 3rd, 2005.

1. If you are in The Breadwinner group, go to Diagon Alley. Using the search engines listed at the bottom of the page, find a map of the middle east. Then, locate Kabul and measure the distance from Kabul to the United States. Draw your own map of the world in pairs. (Corey and James, Paige & Nathan). Locate Kabul on the map and put a star on it. Then, locate Vermont and put another star on it. Measure the distance if you were to fly from Kabul to Vermont. Estimate the cost of airfare for a round trip ticket. Label the names of the other countries you would pass through if you were going to Kabul and cities you might stop in along the way. You will be working on this on Friday as well.
2. If you are doing scrapbooks, please continue working on them. They are due on January 3rd, 2005.
