CHAPTER 4: One Night At Residue
Angela’s Bedroom, Three Rivers
“No, No, No, Too grungy, no no, where the
hell did this come from?” Rayanne said as she rummaged through Angela’s closet.
Angela sat on her bed, almost asleep when Rayanne shouted triumphantly, pulling
out a red halter dress. “Wear this.”
”Ray, that’s not the type of dress you wear to catch up on old times.”
”Believe me Ang, you do, in this case anyway” she said smiling.
Angela gave Rayanne a confused look, but took the dress anyway and headed to the bathroom to get ready.
Club Residue, 7:00pm.
“This place is sure packed” yelled Andrew, the bartender over the music, to his boss Jordan
“What?” yelled Jordan back as he brought up cases of beer from the back room.
“The place is packed!” Andrew yelled again.
“Sure is” said Jordan “It’s going to be a
long night” he said taking his place behind the bar, to give Andrew a hand.
Looking around he sees Rayanne and Sharon walking to the bar.”
“Sharon, Rayanne, what can I get you?”
“Ok” said Rayanne, “we need a white wine, a martini, dirty, 2 olives, for Sharon here, Rickie wants a beer and I’ll have my usual,” she said.
“O.J?” asked Jordan.
“Yep.”
”Hey Catalano” said Rayanne “When are you getting off work?”
“1/2 Hour…. why?”
“Just wondering,” answered Rayanne smirking as she picked up the tray. Jordan watched her and Sharon head back to the table and he noticed someone. Someone in a red dress…. they looked vaguely familiar…. it couldn’t be?.…Angela…. No, No she wouldn’t come back, she wouldn’t, but then again Rayanne never said whom the martini was for…. Jordan shook his head and turned to deal with some customers.
At the back of the bar Rayanne set the tray on the table. She handed Sharon her martini Rickie, the beer and lastly Angela the white wine. Angela took a sip of her drink and looked strangely at Rayanne as she handed Rickie her orange juice. Rayanne noticed the look and responded.
“Rickie, trusts me…. he’s just making sure
nothing was put in my drink by a mistake.”
Angela nodded as Rickie said, “It’s good.”
“So Angela,” said Sharon “dressed up
tonight?”
“Rayanne made me, and she won’t tell me
why”
Angela shifted nervously under the table, the others didn’t’ seem to notice.
Jordan’s going to come into the picture
again, I know he’s around I can feel him.
“Well, ladies.” Said Rickie, “If you don’t’ mind I’m not going to sit here all night, lets get out there.” He pointed to the dance floor. Angela smiled Rickie always made her laugh. She sighed, got up and followed the other three.
Outside Brian’s House, Three Rivers.
Brian stood outside and stared up at the night sky, just ten years ago he stood on this very spot, when…. well, when he told HER, the truth.
A younger Brian stood in the same spot, waiting. He paced back and forth. He was going to tell her, he had to. Angela Chase walked up the sidewalk. Brian stared, she looked like an angel, to him, he had a crush on her since as long as he could remember and she was the most important thing to him, he HAD to let her know.
“Hey, Brian.” Said Angela “Look I’m in sort of a rush, so can we make this quick?” Brian ran his hand through his hair, something he hadn’t done before, he really was nervous.
“A-Angela” he stammered. “I-I wrote it.”
“Wrote what?” asked Angela in a confused
voice.
”The letter, I-I wrote it, Jordan asked me to, so I did. I didn’t want to tell
you, you seem happy, but-but I can’t take it anymore, it’s eating at me. Y-You
need to know.” Brian stopped, out of breath. Angela didn’t respond she just
seemed to be realizing the truth she already knew, deep inside. Without taking
another look at Brian she ran down the street with Brian calling after her.
“Brian, is that you? Asked Patty Chase, as she and Graham walked by Brian’s house.
“Mrs, Chase, Mr. Chase, it’s good to see
you. How have you been?”
”Great” answered Graham “and yourself”
“Good Good.”
”What are you doing now?” asked Graham
”I’m a lawyer actually. I’m a partner in my own firm, in Boston.”
“That’s fantastic!” said Patty “I bet
you’re here for the reunion.”
”Yep”
”Angela’s back t-“ started Graham but Brian cut him off.
“Angela’s back!” said a surprised Brian.
“Yep,”said Patty “She gone out with
Rayanne, Rickie and Sharon now. They’re at that club, what’s its name? Graham?”
”Residue” said Graham “You should head down there Brian, I’m sure she’d love to
see you.”
”Yah, I might” said Brian “Residue, that sounds familiar, who runs it?”
”You know” said Patty nervously “I don’t think we know, do we Graham?”
”No” said Graham just as nervously.
“You know” said Brian, not really paying attention to them “I just might go down.” Getting into his car and waving bye to the Chases he went down the road.
“ You know Patty, Jordan probably is working tonight” said Graham as they watched Brian disappear down the street.
“Yah, but there’s so many people there and it’s been so long, I don’t think Jordan will recognize Brian and vice-versa.”
Club Residue, 8:30pm
“Angela, come on, there’s a great song coming on.”
“No that’s alright I’ll just sit right here, my feet are tired.” She said pulling her arm away from Rayanne.
”Fine have your way,” said Rayanne walking away. “Oh my God, TINO, HEY wait
up.” Rayanne ran after a guy heading toward the opposite end of the room.
Angela laughed.
It’s funny how people change and how they stay the same. It’s like we’re all
meant to change, and we do, but never to the people we care about, we’re still
the same old person.
“This doesn’t seem like a Friday” said a voice behind her.
“It’s Thursday” said Angela, half paying attention
“Oh, are you sure?” said the voice
“Yesterday was Wednesday so?” said Angela, still not paying attention.
“Oh Right,” said the voice.
“So that’s how I-Angela stopped short, this conversation sounded familiar. Then she remembered, she had it over ten years ago with one, Jordan Catalano. Angela spun around to see Jordan, standing in front of her. Angela’s eyes widened and she opened her mouth to say something, but before she could Jordan grabbed her by the arms and pulled her into a deep kiss.
Standing a mere 10 feet away in the entrance to Residue was Brian Krakow, staring at Angela and Jordan looking as though his heart was broken in million pieces.
