Another Day
I opened my eyes and looked at my surroundings. Why am I not surprised? Just another day as me. A celebrity. Even when I’m on vacation, the madness doesn’t stop. I just can’t be me anymore.
I pulled the covers off and rolled myself out of bed. I took a look at the planner opened up on the desk and sighed. Meetings upon meetings til late in the day. Some break this is. They couldn’t even reschedule. Well, at least no performing for a while.
As the hot water hit my face I began to think. Something’s gotta change. All this fame and fortune I have but why aren’t I happy? Oh yeah, that’s right. I rolled my eyes. Love is the key to happiness, or so they say. So why don’t I have any of that? Think self. You’re never in one place at one time. Except for vacations and such, like now. Ten year old girls convince themselves that they’re going to be my wife. And just as an added bonus, the paparazzi and their beautiful gossip doesn’t do the reputation much good either.
The water was freezing cold by the time the ramblings in my head were over with. I quickly changed and I was off.
Exhausted, I returned back to my room, dragging my feet to the bed. I took off my shoes, and quickly changed into some shorts and a t-shirt. The sheets felt really nice as I pulled them up to my chest and laid down. Tonight was going to be consisted of relaxing and catching up on lost sleep. Yawning, I turned out the lamp and turned over on my side.
Just as I began to close my eyes, the sound of my cell ringing filled my ears. I knew I had forgotten to turn that stupid thing off. Pinching the bridge of my nose, I flipped it open and grumbled into the speaker.
“Yeah?”
“Hey bro. What are you doing tonight?”
“Nothing Chris. And that’s exactly how it’s gonna be all night. I’m having a date with my bed and nothing is coming between us.”
“I don’t know what kind of kinky fantasy you’re trying out but come with me to this new club that just opened up.”
“Can’t you ask Joey or somebody else?”
“He can’t come. He’s with Bri tonight. Besides, you haven’t been out clubbing with me in a while. Come on. You’ll have fun.”
“Chris, I’ve been at meetings all day, and I’m tired.” I know I sounded like a little kid complaining, but I honestly didn’t care.
“But we’re on vacation. How can you be working?” Chris whined.
“Because the people I had meetings with wouldn’t reschedule and they’re bastards.”
“PLEASE Lance come with me. Hello? Hot chicks? Hot music? Hot everything?” I could tell he was sticking out his lip just from the way he sounded. Man, I needed to meet some new people.
“Alright, alright. I’ll go. Where is this place?”
As I walked through all the hype, I decided to stop by the bar and get myself a drink. Luckily, there’s one spot open so I sat down immediately.
“What’ll it be?” The bartender asked, giving the guy next to me his drink.
I wasn’t in the mood for anything fancy so I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “Manhattan.”
He nodded and disappeared, leaving me listening to some stupid song I’ve never heard of.
I turned around, searching for someone I knew. Just as I figured, Chris had deserted me. Probably with some hot chicks already.
As my eyes continue to scan, I noticed something to my left. Damn, that was some fiery, red hair. She must’ve gotten here when I was ordering.
“Can I help you?” I guess my staring wasn’t the best thing to do.
I smirked as I contemplated on how to reply back without making an ass of myself.
"Depends."
She gave me back an evil smirk of her own as she playfully crossed her arms.
"Oh really?"
"Sure. You never know what could be running through my mind right now."
"I see. You would probably have to keep whatever it was on the down low from the police right?" Ah, the feisty one.
I gave out a small chuckle.
“You must not know who I am then. I have a clean slate for your information.”
“As a matter of fact I do know who you are. Mr. Wannabe Popstar in Space.”
My mouth dropped as I thought of a comeback. Just as I was about to reply, the bartender returned.
“Your drink, sir?”
I took a drink and turned back to her.
“Now where were we? Oh yes, introducing ourselves.”
“Oh really?” She replied. Her green eyes were glimmering in what little light there was.
“It seems like you already know who I am, so may I ask of you?”
“Hmm…it depends. Dance with me and then maybe I’ll tell you.” She got up and held out her hand for me. Usually I wouldn’t be doing this, but something about her made me think other wise.
I gladly accepted her offer and she lead me out to the dance floor without one second of hesitation. Wow, Chris was right. This was going to be fun.
Things were going great. We danced to all these awesome songs and it was just…great. Just as another song started up, she literally froze against me. Her eyes were as big as saucers. Soon she began to shake.
I looked down at her. She just reached the middle of my chest.
“Hey what’s wrong?”
“I um…I gotta go.” Soon enough she was gone in an instant, blending into all the other dancing bodies.
I wasn’t letting this one go. I looked around until I saw her in the corner. I quickly caught up with her.
“What’s wrong?” I asked again, gently grabbing her shoulders. The look was still on her face, so now worry came upon me to figure out what was wrong. This time, with no warning, her lips were pressed against mine.
Shocked and excited at the same time, I went along with her weird game. Whatever the problem was, I liked it.
“Please forgive me,” she whispered against my lips, as both of her hands caressed my face. I surely didn’t mind at all as my hands snaked around her waist.
She pulled away no sooner than she had begun and visibly relaxed. “I am SO sorry about that.”
I could feel the stupid grin spreading across my face. “Not that I didn’t mind, but um…what was that for?”
“That guy right there,” she pointed to a man heading towards the exit, “has been following me everywhere I go for the past couple of days and it was beginning to freak me out. I really didn’t mean for that to happen though. I just wanted him to get away, thinking I had a boyfriend or something. I guess my brain went into panic mode.”
Damn. Insert foot into mouth mode came into play. I can’t believe I actually just said that to her.
“I’m sorry if I offended you when I said that I didn’t mind kissing you.” I looked down and put my hands in my pockets.
“No. I should be the one apologizing to you and –”
“Alright,” I interrupted her. “We’re even. Now let’s just enjoy the night.”
With a nod and a cute giggle that sent chills up my spine, we continued what we had going before.
Another couple of songs pass by and I pulled her back to the bar area. I had to know this girl’s name.
“Ok. Let’s start over,” I signaled the bartender for another drink.
“Let’s,” she’s replied, falling into the chair and still breathing hard from dancing.
I got up and stood across from her. Watching 50 First Dates last night, an idea suddenly popped into my mind.
“Incredible pick-up line.” That made her smile.
“Encouraging response." I see someone else had watched it.
“Hilarious comeback.”
“Flattered acknowledgement.”
“Uncontrollable enthusiasm.”
“Invitation to sit next to me.”
“Casual acceptance,” I said, sitting next to her.
“Hi.” She held out her hand in which I shook it. “I’m Evelyn.”
“Lance. It’s a pleasure meeting you.”
“Likewise.”
“Ahem.” We both turned around to find the bartender standing there, waiting to be acknowledged.
“Are you getting anything else Evelyn? My treat.”
“Oh, stop living up to your reputation as the sweet, southern hospitality, pretty boy.” I see someone's read up my million and one biographies.
“Hey now, what’s wrong with being polite. Besides it’s the least I can do to make up for the last couple of days you’ve been through.”
“Aww, you really are a sweetheart.”
“Get whatever you want."
“I guess I’ll get the same thing as you.”
I turned towards the bartender.
"Two Manhattans."
Our drinks were served and soon enough we were back out on the dance floor. I was having a blast. By the look on her face, Evelyn was too.
Hours passed, and I soon looked at my watch. 3 a.m. Great. I had even more wonderful meetings to attend to in a few short hours.
I let go of Evelyn and went back to my chair. She followed and sat down next to me.
“I have to get going,” I said, sighing. “Want a lift?.”
“Umm…” she looked around.
“What? You scared about my police report?”
“Oh I could handle you in a flash. I was just looking around for my friends I came with. I guess I’ll tell them I have another way home tonight.”
"I better go tell my buddy that I’m leaving as well.”
“Oh you don’t have to do that.”
I shook my head.
“It’s alright. He didn’t come with me. He just told me about this place and met me here. I’m gonna have to thank him.” I smiled at her.
I could see Evelyn’s face turning as red as her hair.
“Meet you at the exit?”
“You go it.”
I walked through the crowded dance floor in search of Chris. I rolled my eyes as I spotted him – in between 2 women.
“Yo Chris.” I put my hand on his shoulder.
“Come on youngin’ and join the fun.” Yup. He was drunk.
“Naw man. I have to get going. I got more meetings and stuff. You’re ok, right?”
“Sure. Why wouldn't I? Look around.” I laughed, putting my hand on his shoulder.
“I owe ya one for tonight.”
“No worries. Now be on your way little bro. I have two lovely ladies to attend to. Pimpin'.”
I laughed as we gave each other our handshake.
“See ya man.”
With a wave, I headed towards the exit and met up with Evelyn.
“Ready to go?” I asked.
“Lead the way.”
I never noticed how incredibly beautiful Evelyn looked when we were under the moonlight. Her black pants fit her body perfectly. Along with that, her bright green tank top matched well. Her wavy red hair went down to the middle of her back, swaying with every move she made.
She began rubbing her hands up and down her arms.
“You cold?” I was already taking my jacket off.
“A little.”
“Here you go.” I helped her put my jacket on.
“Thanks.”
“No problem,” I replied.
We walked a little ways further until finally I recognized my car.
“Here we are.”
I opened the passenger side door for her and then went to the driver’s side and got in.
“Alright. Where to?”
After Evelyn had giving me directions, I found out that tomorrow…well later today, would be her last day of break before going back to school. She was studying to become a lawyer. No wonder she had that swift attitude. She would be perfect for the job.
She was quiet for a while. I glanced at her quickly before putting my eyes back on the road.
“You ok?” Soon I could see her smirk out of the corner of my eye.
“I never thought I’d be getting a lift from a celebrity.”
“You should be honored then. To be in my presence.”
“Oh yes.” She leaned forward, as if she was trying to make a bow. “Your royal boyband highness.”
I shook my head and rolled my eyes.
“I saw that.”
“You know what?”
“What?” Evelyn was turned towards me and had her hand propped under her chin, waiting for my answer.
“You…you are too much.”
“Too much to handle? Thank you. Proud to be of service.”
Soon, we reached Evelyn’s street and then her house. I really didn’t want this to end. But I didn’t want to intimidate her and ask for her phone number.
I walked her up to the door, and there we were, at a loss for words.
“I wanted to thank you again, for helping me with that annoying stalker dude I had.”
“It’s no problem. Thank you for the great time I had tonight.”
“So umm…I guess I’ll be seeing you soon…on TV that is…” she looked down, kicking a rock onto the grass.
“Yeah…so this is goodbye?” I can’t believe I was letting her go. Chickenshit.
“Yeah.” Before I knew it, Evelyn pulled me into a hug, and I couldn’t help but return it back.
“I guess I’ll umm…see ya around.”
She nodded and soon she opened the door. With one last wave, the door was shut and Evelyn was gone, forever out of my life.
I took one last look at her house and turned around back towards my car. I was just about to open the door, when I heard her voice again.
“Wait! Lance! Don’t go yet!” I smiled as I saw her running towards me. “You forgot your jacket.”
“Oh yeah. Thanks. I completely forgot about that.”
“Umm, can I ask you something?” I noticed her blushing.
“Sure, anything.”
“Would you think less of me if I grabbed you again for another kiss? This time just because I wanted to.”
“Never. I would like that a lot.” I was already moving closer towards her.
She put her arms around my neck and soon our lips met again. This time it felt like sparks were going off. I had no idea what was happening, but I wanted it to last forever. Never had I met somebody like Evelyn. But soon, we would be going back to our everyday lives.
Everything felt perfect. We were under the stars and I just couldn’t let go. But I knew I had to.
Finally after a few moments I pulled back and gave her another hug.
“Goodnight Evelyn.”
“G’night Lance.” She gave me one last smile and turned back around.
Once I saw that she was safely in her house, I turned back to my car. I put my hands into my pocket and felt something. It felt like a piece of paper. I just bought this jacket a couple days ago. It didn’t have anything in there before. My eyes widened as I pulled the paper out. As if the heavens above heard my thoughts, there is was. Her name and number, which looked to be scribbled at lightning speed.
I sighed. Finally, in the first time in a while, I let out a happy sigh.
As I turned the car on, I looked at Evelyn’s house and smiled. Soft music came through the speakers.
I guess my ordinary day turned out to be something more tonight. Who knows, maybe something more can happen in the future with Evelyn. Maybe not.
All I know is, I’m glad I went to that club.
The End
