Chapter 6
Learning by  Reflecting with Technology: Mindtools for Critical Thinking
Mindtools are primarily computers and their different applications.  They help the learner with higher order learning and facilitate critical thinking.  Computers and computer programs are excellent Mindtools.  They give the learner the ability to create and express what they have learned by using such programs as databases, spreadsheets, computer conferencing, and many others.   Mindtools have the students use higher cognitive skills, but they also allow the student to be creative.  In turn making learning more exciting.  In fact the students will be working harder using Mindtools than if they were not.  They will spend a lot of time and effort working on their projects, but they will have ownership of their project and really want it to turn out for the best.  Therefore they will work that much harder and really learn the topic that they are studying.

Hopefully by the next school year, I will be able to implement some of these Mindtools with my third graders.  I want my students to expand their knowledge and gain the experience of using computers to facilitate that learning.  I want them to become excited about what they are learning.  I want them to take ownership of their learning and be proud of what they are producing.  This way, they will hopefully become lifelong learners and continue on with their education.
Computers are excellent Mindtools!
