Chapter 1
Learning with Technology: Technologies for Meaning Making
All throughout my teaching credential we were taught that students needed to learn from doing and from their past experiences. I find that when students actually use the things that they have learned, it becomes more meaningful to them. Constructivists agree with that. By doing instead of memorizing, the learning becomes more a part of them and they realize how they can use the information in the real world.
Technology really allows for that to happen. Technology is a wonderful tool for learning. It aids in accessing information (Internet), communicating with others all over the world (email, Instant Messaging), different ways of expressing ideas and beliefs (web development, video, radio), and even collaboration (working in groups on projects using technology). By bringing technology into my classroom, I will be empowering my students to make their learning more meaningful to them so that they will want to go out and learn new things on their own and think for themselves. |
