Packard Bell

I was a temp in the Production Department from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. I enjoyed it until the supervisor and her friend began leaving their work from the morning shift for me to finish during my shift. The agency began questioning my excessive overtime and I explained what was happening. After a few months, the agency was not happy with the excessive overtime and informed me. I went to the Manager of the production department; who was well aware of the situation. He knew that the supervisor’s friend (who had just become a new Mom) was having trouble staying awake on the job, due to the new baby keeping her awake at night. He also knew that the friend was not as computer literate as I was. One afternoon, when I arrived to work, the Manager called a meeting with all 3 of us. He was fair and told the friend (who was a permanent employee) that if she could not stay awake and learn the computer, she would have to resign.

Approximately one week later, I arrived to work to find that a resignation party was being held for the “sleeping new Mom”.  When I finished my shift and got home that same evening and there was a message on my answering service, from an agency representative, that my assignment with Packard Bell had ended due to “re-organization.”  Luckily, I found employment at the J C Penney outlet in nearby Fallbrook within a week.

A few weeks passed, I received a call from a friend (from Adia; the same agency that put me on the Packard Bell assignment) telling me that she was at Packard Bell in my old position and she saw my name on company documents. She wanted to know why I left Packard Bell. I explained to her that I was told that the assignment had ended due to  “reorganization.”  We both determined that the supervisor was upset with me because she felt I was the cause of her friend being asked to resign and she used her authority to call Adia and have me removed from the assignment after her boss asked her non-productive friend to resign. I was angered, but this unfairness was becoming frustrating and I decided to overlook it since I had found another job.

For approximately 10 years, I worked through temporary agencies enhancing my skills until something permanent came along.
