The Scientific Method
The Scientific Method is the way that scientists get answers to questions.  Scientists use the Scientific Method to do an experiment, then they write up their report.

When you do a Science experiment, you must try to do the same.  Use these headings in your Science report:

o     Purpose

o    Hypothesis

o     Materials

o     Method

o     Variables

o     Observation

o     Analysis and Conclusion

This is what the headings mean:

Purpose
=
Why are you doing this experiment?  What do you want to find out?

Hypothesis
=  Make a
smart guess about what is going to happen, and why you think this is going to happen.  "Predict" the result.  Use what you already know to help you make a good guess.

Materials
=
What things do you need to do this experiment?

Method
=
How are you going to do this experiment? Write a step-by-step list of what you are going to do.  This is sometimes called "Procedure."

Variables
=   Think about the
things that can change what happens in your experiment?

Observation
=   Watch what happens when you do your experiment.  This is "
observation."
=   Write down what happens. This information is called "
data."
=   You may need to do your experiment many times.
=   Make a
chart or T-table to list what happens every time.
=   Sometimes you can make a
graph of your data to make it easier to show what happens.

Analysis and Conclusion
=
Think about what happened.  Look carefully at your data. This is called "analysis."
=   Why did this happen?  What did you learn?  Was your hypothesis right or wrong?  Why?  If you did your experiment again, what would you do differently?
The
answers to these questions make up your "conclusion."
