Parts of Speech
"Parts of speech" is a grammar term for a way to classify words
in a sentence. The parts of speech tell you how a word is used.

noun: a person, place or thing

Example: student, school, lunch, web site, brother, table, English, dog, math, Ms. Lam, pencil case, happiness, Canada, fish, April, Yonge Street

Thing doesn't always have to mean something you can touch or see, like a table.  It can be an idea, behaviour or a feeling:  happiness, idea, philosophy, sight, love, childhood.

* A
proper noun is the name of the person, place or thing, so the first letter is capitalized:  Ms. Lam, Nunavut, Lake Ontario, Rinaldo, English, Friday, April, Valentine's Day.

pronoun: a word that takes the place of a noun

* subject pronouns:  I, you, he, she, it, we, they

Example: Toronto is a big city.  It is a big city.
The students read every day.  They read every day.

* object pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them

Example: Don't make Ms. Lam crazy.  Don't make her crazy.
The dog barked at
the burglars. The dog barked at them.

verb: an action or being word that tells what the noun or pronoun is doing

Example:  sit, is sitting, jump, think, sleep, learn, study, buy, bought, is, was, run, runs, do, does, did, exist, eat, ate

adjective: a word that describes a noun or pronoun

Example:  blue, small, quick, happy, good, smooth, rough, polite, crazy

The
beautiful Rainbow Fish gave away his shiny scales. He was happy because he had many good friends.

These are verbs.
*adverb: a word tells us about a verb  (it usually ends in -ly and answers the question how?)

Example:  quickly, quietly, carefully, patiently, fast, well
He walked
quickly to the bus stop. 


* An adverb can also modify an adjective.

Example:  very, more, badly
She was
very hungry.

* An adverb can also modify another adverb.

Example:  really, very, extremely
The children worked
really quietly.

preposition:  tells the relationship between its noun and another part of the sentence. A preposition is always followed by a noun or pronoun.

Example: in, on, at, over, under, near, from, with, to, after, across

in the caf              The students were in the caf.
near Rinaldo         Little Joe lives near Rinaldo.
at 9 o'clock           They go to sleep at 9 o'clock.
with me                 Come to the library with me.

conjunction:  a word that joins words or sentences

Example:  and, but, or, if, because, when, although, while

I like bananas
and oranges but I don't like apples.

*In this sentence, "
and" joins bananas and oranges; "but" joins the two sentences I like bananas and oranges and I don't like apples.

The students were happy
because they had first lunch.

*In this sentence, "because" joins the two sentences
The students were happy and They had first lunch.

interjection: a short word added to a sentence to show feeling

Example:  Wow! Oh! Ouch! Hey! Well
Wow! That was an easy test!
Well, I'm not sure I got question #2 right.

Test yourself


Copy the sentences, then write the parts of speech under the words.


1.   Little Joe wrote a report on Tuesday.

2.   The cat and dog slept soundly, while the small, grey mouse ran around the dark room.

3.   Hey, you stepped on my foot!

4.   It's noisy in the classroom, because the students are singing "Titanic" very loudly.

5.   We walk fast when we are late.
