I hardly read any books when I was young. I only liked to touch the
cover pages of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys and run my fingers through the
brown, brittle pages filled with unattractive words and sentences. Enid
Blyton and other similar authors sound alien to me. Most probably, thats
the closest I can go to books then.
Consequently, this had an impact on my English as a subject. I
scored B4 for English in O Levels and another C5 for my General Paper
in A Levels in High School. (Okay, that's neither too good nor too bad)
I cant say that my language had improved tremendously prior to writing
this article (since Ive started loving books). But I can assure you that
I do love books when I write this article.
What I wish to share in this article is my experience in developing
a love for books and the joy I can derive from reading them. I hope that
this can help you to discover your bookworm (if you have yet done so)
and derive the joy of reading that I am enjoying now.
I started to befriend books when I started to love the library. With
such a fiery temper in me, its good to find a place of tranquility after
hectic school days and boring schoolwork. When I reach the libray with no purpose in mind,
I start to walk around and look for books. Try once and youll start to love
the library. This is so, because there is a high chance that youll find a
book (or an entire category!) related to your interests.
Im sure you will have certain interests in some aspects. And trying to
find out more about your interest is intuitive. Hence, an attempt to quench
your thirst of knowledge in you area of interest is highly possible in the
library. When you take out the first book that is able to quench your thirst,
youll feel the excitement while you start flipping through the pages. If not,
that book in your hand does not have what you are exactly interested
in. Just like you are not scratching the right place on your back.
And thats not all. When you start to read through what you are interested
in learning, youll derive a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day.
This is because youve acquired a deeper understanding into something that you
wish to, but have no time to do so during the weekdays.
Furthermore, as a personal comment, reading self-help books and motivational
ones give me another level of satisfaction. They inspire me and give me the zest
right after reading them, because I start to see new ways and directions towards
achieving my goals. These books are one of my greatest companions, because more
than often, they give advice generously, and much more than I can expect from my
friends and family. They give me exactly what I needadvices towards life, and
towards managing studies and relationships.
Hence, I hope that this short article has let you understand my experience
in developing the love for books, and aids you in one way or another, to find
the bookworm in you. All the best, and may you find your favourite literature
in time to come!
