Mr. Wheels' Greensboro Solution
This page takes a look into the developing freeway system of Greensboro, NC.  I'm offering a great solution to naming the freeways.  It's a lot different from the plan North Carolina expects to use, but at least, this one is a lot less cluttered.
As it is, North Carolina plans to build a beltway called the Greensboro Urban Loop (or Painter Blvd., depending on who you ask), and sign as many as four Interstates on it.  That makes absolutely no sense, and I'll tell you why:

For one, most of the other beltways get by with one number (such as Atlanta's I-285 and I-610 in Houston).  Second, there'll be massive confusion on a small stretch that's expected to be marked I-40, I-73 and I-85.  On that stretch, if you go north on I-73, you're also going south on I-85.  Third, I-40 should never be signed on this particular road.  It's perfectly fine as is.

So here's my answer to the whole mess:  How about a much simpler method of numbering the freeways?  For example, I-40 and I-73 will stay where they are, and I-840 will be signed on the whole beltway, multiplexing with I-85 in the southeastern quadrant.  Here's how my plan plays out:

--I-40 will continue to run through the center of town, and I-73 will join I-40 at their current interchanges.

--I-685 will run on the old I-85, multiplexing with I-40 for some time.

--I-840 will occupy the entire beltway, multiplexing with the new I-85 for some time.

--I-273 and I-685 exit lists can be found in the regular Exit Lists section.

--I-40, I-73 and I-840 exit lists can be found in the Greensboro Special section.
