~Special Effects~

This is what a little bit of uplighting can do to add dramatics to a class. Using uplights is the easiest and most attractive method of creating dramatic lighting for any setting, since the heightened contrast and distorted shadows add mystery to the subject. Add to this dramatic music and sound effects, along with lights on dimmer switches and controlled by the teacher by remote control during key elements of the lesson without the notice of the students and you can be pretty sure that no doodling will be taking place in class.
In addition to livening up a lesson, drawing attention to certain aspects of it, and just generally making it more memorable, these kinds of effects can be useful in a number of ways. For instance, I use uplighting whenever I show a video in class, therefore the room is dark enough to watch the video but not so dark that I can't monitor the students.

Although I'm working on more sophisticated special effects controllers, depicted below, are the wireless remote control devices seen in the description above. They are the best available for their ease of use and low cost. I bought mine at Radio Shack, but a good source on the web with lots of descriptive information is asiHome

Another source for much more sophisticated yet relatively low cost special effects is Blue Point Engineering.
