Children begin guided reading in grade one continuing at the reading level they ended at in kindergarten.  Based upon those reading levels, children are grouped into groups of 6 or 7 with similar abilities.  As children develop reading strategies and become better readers, they may move from group to group depending upon individual needs.

We use PM Starters as our main reading series.  Generally the average child begins grade one at level 3 and ends at level 16.  These books include fiction, nonfiction and fairy tale/folktale plays.

Grade two students begin grade two at the level they last completed in grade one, generally level 16.  Like the grade ones they are grouped according to their ability and may move depending upon indiviual needs.  The average child finishes grade two reading easily at level 24.  Grade two students also complete short novel studies from stories such as Amelia Bedelia and Nate the Great.

Home reading is strongly encouraged in our classroom as it is a necessary part of our literacy goal to become good readers.

Aside from guided reading, children also participate in partner reading, shared reading, and choral reading.
