CGU4U WORLD GEOGRAPHY INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECT
Mrs. Whitfield 2002 - 2003

WHAT ASSIGNMENT EXPLAINED WHAT IT'S WORTH DUE DATE
(NO EXCEPTIONS)
General Information Your task is to write a magazine-style article that compares two ecumenes / world geographic issuses selected from anywhere in the world. Historical studies are acceptable too.
All submissions must be word-processed. Hand-written submissions will not be accepted (i.e. You will receive a mark of zero for hand-written submissions. )
You are responsible to keep a copy of all submissions on disk. Bring the disk to class with you: you never know when you might be able to use class time to work on it.
Always use a spell-checker.
Read your assignments, OUT LOUD TO SOMEONE ELSE!!! (to ensure they make sense, and flow properly) before you print the good copy for submission.
Your ISP is worth 30% of your total mark for this course.

80% of your ISP is for "PROCESS" and only 20% is for "PRODUCT"

1. Considering  ecumenes. 1. Think about different ecumenes: developed and underdeveloped. Think about the populations and cultures of the people who live in these areas. Consider the physical geography. Consider issues that affect the settled areas of the world.
2. Choose a few (4 or 5) locations / issues that are in different geographic areas. The more different your locations / issues, the easier it will be to complete this assignment. You may also decide to choose ecumenes/ issues at two different scales (i.e., an extreme might result in a comparison between a fence erected in a particular neighbourhood (i.e. Cuincy, France) and a boundary surrounding awhole country (Bolivia). You could choose two mountain ecumenes, or two island ecumenes, an urban area, a rural settlement, a culturally unique neighbourhood, etc. The possibilities are endless.
3. Look on the internet and in newspapers and journals to see how easy / difficult it is to find information on the specific ecumenes / issues you have chosen. Collect some articles or internet addresses that you think might be useful in studying these topics.
4. As you research, for each of the ecumenes / issues: Jot down the characteristics that you think define the location. Think physical, social, political, environmental characteristics, etc. Point form is fine.
5. Word process the entire assignment, spell-check, read it over carefully for style, print a good copy and submit it on the due date.
10 marks

2. Make connections 1. Examine the ecumene / issue characteristics you noted from the last assignment.
2. Define the basic underlying cause of each characteristic in the ecumene / issue. For example, for Costa Rica, you may have listed deforestation as a characteristic defining this ecumene. The basic underlying cause of Costa Rican deforestation might be mismanagement. But remember, not all characteristics are negative! eg. What might Brazil's rich multiculturalism be attributed to?
3. Continue in this manner linking characteristics to causes, until your list for each ecumene has been exhausted.
10 marks

3. Choose a Topic 1. From the last assignment, choose two ecumenes / issues that have a similar underlying cause. E.g. You may have noticed that for Hawaii, you had come up with island isolation, and for  Iqaluit, you had also arrived at social isolation. From this connection, you may decide that you are going to compare Hawaii to Iqaluit for your research topic. Don't be afraid that the ecumenes seem too different. If they are too similar, it is much harder. For example, do not choose two ecumenes where deforestation is the defining characteristic for both. Instead choose one location where deforestation occurs, and another location suffering a different environmental threat, e.g. wetland depletion.
2.  Make sure that you are very specific in the scope of each ecumene / issue that you wish to examine. i.e. The United States is too big. The variety from one place to another across the country is simply too great.
3. Print the two specific ecumenes / issues you have chosen on a piece of paper.
4. Name and Describe the underlying common theme uniting both issues in a sentence or two.
5. List one resource citation for each.
5 marks

4. Title Page 1. Create an attractive cover for your project. Include the full, specific title, your name, my name, and COLOUR!!!! 5 marks

5. Point-blank info. After further, in depth research into your two ecumenes / issues, prepare two separate reports. SORT and number the details of each settlement into LINKS, and BARRIERS for each of your two locations in POINT FORM. Here, you are considering how each ecumene is linked to the rest of the world, and how it is barred from participation globally. There will be four sections to this submission: Ecumene #1 - Links; Ecumene #1 - Barriers; Ecumene #2 - Links; Ecumene #2 - Barriers)
Include ALL the specific facts or the INTIMATE DETAILS OF EACH ECUMENE sorted into lists of links and barriers.
Make sure to include:   a) A description of the location. Does the location act as a link or a barrier? E.g. Europe's location links it to other ecumenes due to its centrality; whereas New Zealand's location acts as a barrier. Use a map, or series of maps to show your ecumene's location, boundaries, and other important features. Don't forget to indicate map scale. Maps must be enhanced in some way. (i.e., no mere photocopies.)
b) Describe the sunbullet.gif (939 bytes)Who, What, and Where of the settlement.
c) Describe the unique attributes of the culture that have evolved at this location. Do these attributes act as links or barriers? Look at the sunbullet.gif (939 bytes)"10 geographic qualities" pages. Do the the details of your ecumene agree with the general characteristics outlined?
Don't forget to include specific examples, dates, thematic maps or graphs etc. that support your placement of the attributes in the link / barrier lists. E.g. if population growth helps development in the area i.e. Barrie, Ont., put it in your LINK list, while in the other location, i.e. Bangladesh, population growth would most likely be placed in a BARRIER list.
20 marks

6. Bibliography of all sources. Prepare a bibliography citing the sources you have used for your research.
Proper citations must be used for all material. Correct bibliographic format is provided in your student agenda. I will randomly choose what to track down and will not award marks if I cannot find your exact reference. Each student will have at least one random check.
- Students should use a wide variety of RECENT resources, e.g. journals, media, video, radio, Internet, as well as books and CD Roms. If it's five years old, its ancient history!!!
5 marks

8. Web diagram Create a web diagram linking your two ecumenes in as much detail as possible. Link the numbers of the point blank info. you created earlier. (i.e. Ecumene #1, LINK, point number 16 might be linked to Ecumene #2, BARRIER, point number 3. You could use a code like 1L16 - 2B3 to represent this connection.)
Make a list of all the connections you see between the point blank info. and beside each code, use sentences to describe the similarities and differences between the connection. (i.e. 1Y16 - 2N3 is linked because they both show a concern for human suffering, but in 1P16, the concern is for an individual, and in 2N3 concern is for the whole country.)
Show each relationship in as much detail as you can. Provide specific examples of the relationships, as they pertain to your specific ecumenes.
Details and examples are important. Give me lots of them.
10 marks

9. How to
Write a Comparison
Read the articles available on how to write a comparison.. Make notes and think about how your own particular style is going to emerge in this comparison.
Make a list of things to keep in mind when you are writing your own comparison. (i.e. helpful hints).

10. COMPARISON
(This is the most
important part of the
project - i.e., the synthesis part!!!)
Write a dynamic newspaper or magazine article to compare your two ecumenes. Remember, "comparison" means to explain the similarities and differences, and to analyze the details.
Your comparison will be an indication of how well you have organized the data you have collected and will illustrate the synthesis of your ideas. Comparisons are not just lists. You must make a connection between each idea, explain your unique perspective, and outline the thought process that lead you to make that connection. You must not leave anything up to my assumption. Organize your thoughts carefully and tell me exactly what your connection implies. Ask yourself "SO WHAT?" after each statement. Why would anyone care that the culture of the Kalahari bushmen is being eroded by contact with western culture, just like the local cultures in the GTA are being eroded by amalgamation? Is there a solution as to how to overcome these barriers faced by each human group to be found in the comparison? What should each group do to evolve satisfactorily and further their linkages to the global village?
First submission = 12 point font, double spaced, paragraph form in the style of one of the articles studied in class (See #9 above).
Last submission, articles must be written in 3-column style, using 10 point font, Include photos, or maps etc. Give your article a professional look.
Spell check and pay attention to detail.
20 marks

11. Product Put items # 4 - 10, into one neat and professional package. Make corrections as necessary, or submit fresh, updated copies. The idea is to get your product as close to perfect as possible. Make sure you are happy and proud of the results before you submit your final copy. 20 marks

12. Self- Evaluation Write a one page response to what you have gained personally by completing this project. Do you have any new insights into the evolution of the human environment? Was it difficult to come up with your own connections and to write down your own perceptions of the ecumenes? Do you think you did a good job? Did you like the style of the ISP?
What could be improved on your part or on mine? Any other comments?
5 marks applied to the ISP "Process" mark at the end of the ISP submission.
