Political restraint The Berlin Wall - built to stop those who had become disillusioned with the communist system in East Berlin from crossing to the West.
Political encouragement The settling of eastern Finland in the 1960s to ensure that the USSR could not easily legitimise any invasion
Economic dissuasion The tax incentives that were offered by the British Government and the EC to keep people and employment in the peripheral areas, e.g. the Highlands and Islands of Scotland
Forced movement for economic reasons Asians in Idi Amin's Uganda - the Asians who ran many of the economic enterprises in Uganda had their property confiscated and pressure was put on them to emigrate; eventually, after resistance, they were expelled.
Forced movement for political reasons Palestinians were expelled from the Occupied West Bank territories in Israel in 1992 in response to violent activities against the occupying Israelis.
Economic encouragement European immigration to Australia in the 1950s through the Assisted Passage Scheme.
